Department Summary

The UNT Controller's Office oversees daily accounting and financial reporting for the UNT campus in Denton. The controller office also oversees capital asset accounting, cash and state appropriation management and all external reporting.

Position Overview

This position performs routine (journeylevel) accounting work. Work involves maintaining, preparing, posting, and balancing accounting and financial statements, records, documents, or reports. May specialize in some phase of accounting work such as federal funds accounting, accounts receivable, cash management, property and equipment control, cost, or bond servicing. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures affecting the maintenance of accounting records and automated accounting systems. Ability to interpret and apply accounting theory; to work accurately with numerical detail; to analyze, consolidate, and interpret accounting data; and to communicate effectively. Strong problem solving and analytical skills. Ability to analyze, consolidate, and present accounting data in clear concise form.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications: Masters Degree in accounting or business administration Eligibility to sit for the CPA exam Experience with a State of Texas entity Experience in higher education Experience with PeopleSoft financials(For recent graduates, an internship with a national accounting firm would count toward experience)

Required License/Registration/Certifications

 

Job Duties

  • Prepares periodic analyses of fund balances and expenditures, and prepares technical reports on payroll, estimates, cost data, and budget items. 
  • Audits accounting and financial documents for accuracy and compliance with departmental policies and procedures and state and federal statutes. 
  • Classifies, codes, posts, and balances financial and accounting documents and records. 
  • Prepares financial statements, reports, schedules, and exhibits; prepares and/or processes general journal entries; and prepares and/or processes payment, cash, purchase, travel, and related vouchers. 
  • Researches and reconciles discrepancies in accounts, bank statements, or appropriation balances; and reports findings. 
  • Reviews agency accounting records, such as expenditure, fund, appropriation, expense and revenue collection records, and ensures agency assets are accounted for properly. 
  • May recommend improvements, adaptations, or revisions to the accounting system and accompanying procedures. 
  • Maintains accurate and efficient cash control records. 
  • Assists UNT System Enterprise personnel with inquiries, errors, projects, and other activities as needed regarding the financial system and information managed by the UNT Controllers Office. 
  • Performs related work and duties as assigned. 
  • Prepares reports, schedules, supporting documentation, vouchers, exhibits and/or other financial information during the annual audit process and for the Annual Consolidated Financial Report (ACFR).
