Department Summary
UNT’s Jazz Studies program is widely regarded as one of the nation’s most respected and was the first-degree program of its kind in the field. Our faculty members are dedicated teachers as well as nationally and internationally known performers. They’ve earned Grammy Award nominations, toured internationally, conducted classes at the renowned Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops, and written books about jazz. We provide you many opportunities to perform with on- and off-campus ensembles. This includes the One O’Clock Lab Band, which has earned six Grammy Award nominations and toured Europe, Japan, Thailand, and Australia. We also sponsor the acclaimed Jazz Singers.
UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.
Position Overview
The Department of Jazz Studies seeks qualified individuals for its Adjunct Instructor Pool and welcomes applicants at any time. This posting is for the Fall 2025, Spring 2026, and Summer 2026 semesters. The specific courses involved may vary from semester to semester and openings to teach these courses to develop on a periodic basis, depending on department teaching needs.
The anticipated need is for adjunct instructors to teach applied lessons in jazz performance and classes in jazz improvisation and performance. All instruction will take place on the UNT Denton campus.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience in playing jazz at a professional level.
Expertise and experience in teaching jazz performance.
Master’s degree in music required.
Professional experience may be accepted in place of an earned degree.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in teaching jazz performance with reference to the standards of performance of the UNT Jazz Studies program.
