Department Summary
International Affairs is a guide and champion for campus internationalization at the University of North Texas. It is our mission to support the university’s global endeavors and international initiatives. This position will be a part of the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) team. The ISSS Office at the University of North Texas provides compassionate immigration advice and support to UNT’s 12,000 international students and scholars, and alumni.
Position Overview
This role will be responsible for issuing I20 immigration documents and advising F1 international students on immigration topics such as full time enrollment, work authorization, and general maintenance of immigration status. This position will report to the Assistant Director of International Student Services and work closely with our F1 student service team.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Must be eligible to serve as a Designated School Official under U.S. Department of Homeland Security requirements.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Understanding of the immigration regulation(s) associated with assigned area. Must meet federal requirements to serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO). Experience with SEVIS and a vendor software. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Working knowledge of business practices and procedures, ability to organize, detail oriented; capacity to multitask; good time management skills. Ability to work well under stress. Ability to work in an open office area with much activity.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree preferred; At least one year of higher education experience; relevant experience providing customer experience to stakeholders; general knowledge of F1 immigration rules and regulations; experience with PeopleSoft or another database software, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Must meet federal requirements to serve as a Designated School Official (DSO).
Job Duties
- Documentation: Provide documentation as required for international students efficiently and accurately. This includes issuing I20s and letters within specified processing times as well as helping to complete general student requests, UNT document processing, and OPT applications to USCIS.
- Advising: Provide accurate and compassionate advising for F1 International Students including giving information and advice to students regarding maintenance of their status, employment opportunities, etc. It also includes giving information to departments and the University Community as data requests require. Complex advising cases will be escalated to a Senior Immigration Advisor.
- Compliance: Conduct reporting as required by immigration regulations for F1 students. This includes semesterly SEVIS registration and intermittent updates such as program changes, including change of major, change of level, program extensions and completion dates.
- Database Maintenance: Use university databases such as Sunapsis and EIS to maintain accurate and confidential student records, batch to SEVIS, and keep data up to date.
- Collaboration: Works cooperatively with other departmental units in support of international student requests such as the Graduate School, UNT Admissions, Academic Advising, IELI Admissions, and various other departments throughout campus.
