Department Summary

The College of Health and Public Service (HPS) at the University of North Texas, distinguished as one of the few Tier‐One research universities designated as a Hispanic‐Serving Institution (HSI), prepares graduates to address diverse and complex social issues such as aging, disability, disaster management and recovery, criminal justice, health disparities, and public safety, and find solutions to challenges in public administration, public health, and urban design. We have seven academic departments with undergraduate and graduate programs, the Center for Public Management, the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, UNT Workplace Inclusion & Sustainable Employment (WISE), and a number of professional development and clinical training programs to facilitate careers to address a global society.

HPS students are trained to lead nonprofits, become educators, researchers, and professionals who strengthen the diverse communities we serve with thoughtful, inclusive, and equitable practices as audiologists, behavior analysts, city managers, emergency managers, health care administrators, public safety administrators, public health specialists, rehabilitation counselors, speech-language pathologists, social workers, urban planners and more.

Located within HPS, the Department of Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology (ASLP) provides the finest graduate professional education in both speech-language pathology and audiology while maintaining an excellent undergraduate degree. The program stresses excellence in teaching, research, and service by its faculty and students. As a component of the educational program, the department operates the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, which offers professional services to members of our campus community and the general public for the purpose of providing clinical training for students. The Center offers state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment of speech, language, and hearing disorders.

Position Overview

The staff Clinical Audiologist provides comprehensive audiology services to clients at the UNT Speech and Hearing Center and supervises undergraduate and doctoral level audiology students in the UNT Speech and Hearing Center. They are the clinical lead to facilitate day-to-day operations in the Audiology Clinic at the UNT Speech and Hearing Center.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctorate Degree in Audiology and four years of experience in Audiology clinical practice. License to practice in the State of Texas. Certificate of Clinical Competency (Audiology) or Fellow of the American Academy of Audiology (Audiology).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knows and follows best practices of the discipline and stays current with changes in the field.
  • Knows and follows protocols of the UNT Speech and Hearing Center.
  • Ability to examine and assess clients with hearing, balance or related ear problems.
  • Ability to fit and dispense hearing aids.
  • Ability to diagnose and administer relief for various hearing related issues including vertigo.
  • Ability to counsel patients and families on ways to communicate using various communication methods.

Job Duties:

  • Provides state-of-the-art hearing and balance assessment, following preferred practice patterns of the discipline and protocols of the UNT Speech and Hearing Center.
  • Dispenses hearing aids and assistive listening technology, following preferred practice patterns of the discipline and protocols of the Speech and Hearing Center.
  • Provides state-of-the-art hearing therapy (i.e. aural (re)habilitation) to adults and children who need assistance beyond amplification devices.
  • In coordination with the Audiology Clinical Director, assists with day-to-day operation of the audiology clinic and hearing aid dispensary.
  • Provides clinical teaching and supervision of students enrolled in practicum in collaboration with ASLP faculty and in a manner responsive to the individual and collective needs of audiology graduate student clinicians.
  • Actively participates in helping the Department and its members accomplish group and individual goals in a productive, cooperative, and respectful manner.
  • Coordinates annual equipment calibration process.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
