Department Summary

The University of North Texas (UNT) Jazz Studies Program, established in 1947, is a world-renowned leader in jazz education. Offering comprehensive undergraduate and graduate degrees, the program trains students in performance, composition, arranging, and pedagogy. Our acclaimed faculty, distinguished performers, and educators mentor students in a diverse and dynamic environment. Students perform in various ensembles, including the Grammy-nominated One O’Clock Lab Band. With state-of-the-art facilities and a commitment to creativity and collaboration, UNT Jazz Studies shapes the future of jazz.

Position Overview

The Co-Teacher for the UNT Vocal Jazz Seminar plays a vital role in delivering a high-quality, immersive educational experience for students pursuing vocal jazz performance. Working in collaboration with the lead instructor and other faculty, the Co-Teacher supports instruction, rehearsal coordination, and individual student development in both solo and ensemble settings.

This position requires strong musicianship, a deep understanding of vocal jazz styles and pedagogy, and the ability to work effectively with students of varying skill levels. The Co-Teacher contributes to the artistic and educational success of the seminar by fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Proven professional experience as a career jazz vocalist
  • Previous experience with UNT Vocal Jazz Summer Workshops 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proven experience in jazz performance, with a focus on vocal jazz.
  • Strong teaching or coaching experience at the collegiate or advanced high school level.
  • Familiarity with jazz theory, improvisation, and ensemble performance.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Degree in music or equivalent professional experience preferred.

Job Duties:

  • Assist in planning and delivering daily seminar activities, including masterclasses, rehearsals, and sectionals.

Physical Requirements:

  • Communicating with others to exchange information. 
  • Lifting and moving objects up to 20 pounds. 
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting or standing.

Environmental Hazards:

  • No adverse environmental conditions expected.
