Department Summary
The College of Health and Public Service (HPS) at the University of North Texas prepares graduates to address diverse and complex social issues such as aging, disability, disaster management and recovery, criminal justice, health disparities and public safety, and find solutions to challenges in public administration, public health and urban design.
We have eight academic departments with undergraduate and graduate programs, the Kristin Farmer Autism Center, the Center for Public Management, the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, the UNT Work Inclusion and Supported Employment (UNTWISE) program, UNT ELEVAR, and several professional development and clinical training programs to facilitate careers to address a global society.
HPS Student Advising guides students from start to finish, helping them explore careers, choose their major, select courses, meet university requirements, prepare for graduation and more to ensure they have a meaningful undergraduate experience at UNT.
Position Overview
The Senior Academic Advisor provides comprehensive support to FTIC, transfer, and non-traditional students within the College of Health & Public Service. This role involves guiding students through degree requirements, course planning and graduation processes while promoting student engagement and academic success. The advisor serves as a subject matter expert for specialized majors, supports curriculum development and collaborates with college leadership to implement advising initiatives and ensure alignment with institutional policies. This position also contributes to advisor training, quality assurance and strategic efforts to meet targeted student outcomes.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree and four years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Strong presentation, conflict resolution and problem-solving abilities. Skilled in engaging differing populations through effective verbal and written communication across internal and external groups. Proven ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships. Demonstrated success in managing projects and leading cross-functional teams to achieve strategic goals.
2. Academic & Administrative Expertise: Advanced proficiency in academic advising and career outcomes with a deep understanding of student development and support strategies. Thorough knowledge of university policies and procedures, with the ability to quickly assimilate new institutional guidelines.
3. Analytical & Technical Skills: Competent in integrating and analyzing complex information to produce actionable reports. Experienced in using a wide range of advanced computer applications and systems.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Extensive experience and advanced knowledge of student advising practices, including familiarity with university and college policies and procedures.
2. Ability to effectively interpret and communicate academic information across a wide range of majors and disciplines.
3. In-depth understanding of degree programs, with a strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to solve complex academic and administrative problems.
4. Excellent communication skills, along with proven self-direction, managerial and supervisory capabilities.
5. Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with various university offices.
6. A commitment to student success and collegial engagement, with a passion for fostering active involvement among students and colleagues.
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Job Duties
- Advanced Advising Expertise. Provides high-level academic advising to FTIC (First Time in College), transfer, and non-traditional students. Promotes student engagement and self-efficacy alongside degree program and career guidance. Manages the student lifecycle from enrollment through career establishment. Serves as a resource for other advisors in navigating complex advising scenarios. Applies specialized knowledge to meet institutional mandates for targeted student populations and achieves designated outcomes.
- Training and Development. Coordinates and supports training initiatives for advisors and departmental staff, focusing on advising mandates, special programs and university/college policies. Works individually with advisors to enhance advanced advising techniques, retention strategies, program promotion and support for special populations.
- Program Coordination and Implementation. Oversees the execution of assigned advising initiatives, including group advising sessions, new student orientation planning and advising workshops. Assigns tasks and monitors completion to ensure quality and consistency.
- Quality Assurance and Process Improvement. Conducts quality checks on advising-related projects and outcomes. Prepares communications and program materials aligned with degree requirements. Reviews student progression and orientation audits to streamline administrative processes and ensure compliance with mandates.
- Academic Planning and Documentation. Collaborates with HPS leadership to produce academic documents, catalog content, career development materials and structured academic plans (2-year and 4-year pathways). Ensures timely and accurate curriculum uploads and alignment with institutional standards.
