Department Summary

The Vascular Biology Laboratory, led by Dr. Anastasia Sacharidou, is seeking a motivated Research Scientist to support our expanding research program in endothelial biology and cardiovascular disease. Our team investigates how blood vessels actively regulate health and disease using state-of-the-art approaches, including advanced imaging, molecular biology, transcriptomics, and animal models.

UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.

Position Overview

The Research Scientist will support ongoing projects by conducting experiments, managing lab operations, and assisting with the training of undergraduate students. This position offers the opportunity to gain substantial experience in translational vascular biology and directly contribute to impactful discoveries within a collaborative and highly interdisciplinary environment.

Employees in this job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure and they must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular/Cell Biology, or related field.
• At least 2-4 years of prior laboratory research experience.
• Demonstrated proficiency in basic molecular and cellular biology techniques.
• Ability to follow detailed protocols and maintain accurate laboratory records.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Strong knowledge of molecular and cellular biology principles.
• Ability to work independently while also thriving in a collaborative team setting.
• Excellent organizational and time-management skills to balance multiple projects.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, including preparation of data for presentations and manuscripts.
• Commitment to maintaining a rigorous, safe, and inclusive research environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in Biomedical Sciences or related field.
• Experience with endothelial biology, immunology, or metabolism research.
• Hands-on experience with mouse models (injections, dissections, colony management).
• Familiarity with transcriptomic analysis (bulk RNA-seq or single-cell RNA-seq).

Required License/Registration/Certifications

 

Job Duties

  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory experiments, including cell culture, immunoblotting, ELISA, PCR, flow cytometry, and immunofluorescence microscopy. 
  • Assist in the handling and phenotyping of genetically engineered mouse models, including injections, tissue harvest, and basic surgical procedures under supervision. 
  • Conduct molecular and cellular assays to evaluate endothelial dysfunction, thrombosis mechanisms, and insulin signaling. 
  • Maintain accurate and detailed experimental records; analyze, interpret, and present data at lab meetings. 
  • Manage lab inventory, order supplies, and ensure compliance with institutional safety protocols.
  • Contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, grant applications, and conference presentations. 
  • Provide technical guidance to undergraduate trainees, ensuring rigorous and reproducible experimental practices.
