UNT Health is the clinical practice group of UNT Health Fort Worth, offering primary and multispecialty care dedicated to building healthier communities. Our services span the Fort Worth campus, Denton, and Dallas, and include mobile, in-home, hospital, and long-term care.
We utilize interprofessional teams, where physicians, advanced practice practitioners, therapists, pharmacists, and specialized staff work collaboratively.
We intentionally integrate healthcare students, residents, and fellows into care delivery at select practice locations, fostering the development of future health professionals while optimizing patient treatment plans.
Position Overview
The UNT Health Clinical Practice Group Risk Manager is responsible for administering and directing operational aspects of the clinical practices risk management program, with a focus on professional liability. This includes claims analysis, insurance portfolio oversight, and proactive risk identification and prevention across the clinical enterprise.
The role also includes the supervision of the Medical Records team and the release of records process. The UNT Health Clinical Practice Group Risk Manager is actively involved in developing and implementing procedures for operational efficiency and maintaining an effective collaboration with legal counsel, UNT System partners, clinical practice administration, clinicians, and insurance partners to mitigate exposure and ensure compliance.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and five (5) years related experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, statutes, and regulations (including HIPAA) relevant to healthcare and professional liability risk management.
- Understanding of commercial professional liability insurance policies, indemnification principles, and the procurement/administration of insurance programs.
- Familiarity with clinical practice operations, patient care delivery models, medical terminology, and the clinical environment within a health system or academic setting.
- Ability to track, monitor, and analyze complex claim data, identify trends, interpret case law, and synthesize information into actionable mitigation strategies.
- Skill in developing, implementing, and overseeing risk management programs, policies, and procedures (e.g., disengagement, missed appointments).
- Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment, particularly when determining reportable events, assessing liability exposure, and handling confidential information.
- Ability required for monitoring loss runs, preparing regulatory compliance reports, and administering insurance documentation accurately.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience working in a healthcare risk management program.
- A Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Healthcare Administration, Business, or Public Health) or previous experience or a degree/certificate as a Paralegal or equivalent training in legal processes.
- Certification as a Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM).
Job Duties
- Insurance & Compliance Oversight:
- Administer and manage professional liability insurance policies with brokers and carriers (procurement, maintenance, and management).
- Handle claim history/insurance verification requests, using independent judgment for reportable events.
- Monitor insurance programs, ensuring broker and administrator effectiveness.
- Prepare and submit all required statutory and regulatory reports to state agencies for appropriate signatures.
- Claim Management & Analysis
- Monitor, research, and analyze internal/external claim trends, case law, statutes, and regulations to develop risk mitigation strategies.
- Partner with Legal Counsel and Adjusters on claim investigation and management.
- Maintain loss run reports for open and closed claims.
- Practice and promote Early Event Management for claim resolution.
- Provide an annual report on practice claims history and process legal invoice audits/payments.
- Risk Identification & Prevention:
- Establish relationships with medical staff, department managers, and staff to facilitate risk identification.
- Partner with administration, quality improvement, patient relations, and clinical departments to: -
- Provide guidance on patient complaint resolution.
- Identify liability exposures and ensure compliance.
- Plan proactive claim prevention measures.
- Promote compliance with risk management policies and procedures (e.g., disengagement, missed appointment guidelines).
- Team Leadership:
- Prepare and present reports on risk assessment, exposure, intervention, and evaluation to administration and committees.
- Keep management informed by analyzing special reports, identifying trends, and summarizing information.
- Supervise HSC Health Medical Records team members.
