Department Summary
Political science studies the various political decisions that societies make, starting with the basic constitutional one of who rules and how and extending to every manner of the ranking (and funding) of the wide array of human pursuits. Our discipline is divided into four major areas: American Government, International Relations, Comparative Politics, and Political Theory. In addition, we have a strong focus on research methods.
Position Overview
Assisting the Advisors in the Graduate Programs in the Department of Political Science; Assisting the Political Science staff on an as needed basis.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate's degree and two years of office administration experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Demonstrated ability to provide outstanding customer service. Demonstrated skill in verbal and written communications. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability t handle multiple priorities. Strong attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications: Intermediate MS Office skills. Strong organizational skills. Competence in updating and maintaining department web pages and related databases. Ability to adjust to constant changes in schedule from being constantly busy to having possible extended time in between job demands. Willingness to work on tasks independently and with a minimal amount of supervision or instruction once the duties are learned.
Job Duties
- Responding to email requests for information and graduate advising questions.
- Answer questions about graduate programs
- Schedule and coordinate graduate orientations
- Enter graduate course catalog changes in curriculog
- Assist with undergraduate and graduate assessment processes; in tracdat/improve
- Start of Term Assignment of class permission numbers for graduate seminars; R6 forms preparation; processing title forms for both graduate courses
- Maintenance of Graduate Student Files and data base (including class enrollment figures/history, graduation numbers for each term, student GPA figures, etc.)
- Prepare and maintain graduate student applicant files and data base
- House and organize letters of recommendation for graduate student applications for employment; submit letters in a timely manner
- Provide office support for Administrative Coordinator and other staff members on an asneeded basis; answering phone, greeting and directing visitors, helping with student problems, etc.
- Purchasing through pcard and epro (as backup to office manager and primary assistant to graduate academic advisers and inhouse programs)
- Work with graduate student travel requests; process reimbursement for recruitment weekend; fill in when CLASS travel representative is unavailable
