The First Generation Success Center was established in 2021 as university priority to provide strategic support and engagement initiatives for UNT's first-generation and Emerald Eagle Scholars student populations. Programming and support initiatives center arounds learning, development, access, community development, engagement, and support. The Center cares deeply and works hard to ensure all students are welcomed and championed towards success. The First Generation Success Center falls under the Center for Belonging and Engagement department.
Position Overview
The University of North Texas is seeking candidates for the position of Coordinator for UNTs First Generation Success Center. The Coordinator reports to the Director of the First Generation Success Center and will assist in the development and implementation of programs intended to remove barriers to success for first-generation students on campus. This position will lead programming initiatives for the FGSC, conduct 1:1 student meetings, and assist with marketing efforts such as campus and community tabling events. Common programming themes include: financial aid, financial literacy, career initiatives, graduate school exploration, student success, navigating campus life, and building community.
First generation students represent 42% of the UNT student community.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related field and two years' of student services, student affairs, counseling, advising, or related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent public speaking skills with experience in conducting training workshops. Ability to provide leadership and mentoring to student populations. Experience in networking across departments and programs. Ability to communicate and work with a diverse population. Strong organizational skills and ability to simultaneously execute multiple projects. Excellent verbal and written communication, and computer skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in higher education, student services, public education or related field. Experience working with first-generation populations, TRIO programs, or related programming targeting support of underserved populations. Must have experience with event programming (small-large scale) and understanding navigating campus resources. Bilingual in Spanish and English (preferred, but not required)
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Job Duties:
- Coordinate programs and services originating out of the center including planning, development, implementation, promotion/dissemination, and logistical support of program/project activities.
- Work closely with campus outreach initiatives to assist with the transition of first-time in college and transfer first-generation students to UNT as required.
- Provide individual and small group advising to students with knowledge in the areas of financial aid/financial literacy; graduate school admissions, personal wellness; professional development.
- Maintain accurate records of services; maintain university and federal standards of compliance, and completion of all required university trainings.
- Assist with hiring, training, and supervision of student employees as well as graduate assistant.
- Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with academic departments, faculty members, student affairs, and other university departments and offices to ensure a holistic experience for first-generation students.
- Sustain an awareness of current research trends in terms of low-socioeconomic and/or first-generation college students.
- Advance philosophies of student affairs and cultural diversity.
- Assist in the development and implementation of assessments, evaluations, and research activities related to the program.
- Support all programs and initiatives originating underneath the within the Division of Student Affairs.
- Assist with the development, revision, and distribution of marketing, educational, and informational publications and materials, including social media, related to the First Generation Success Center.
- Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor.
