Department Summary
The UNT System Controller leads financial management and accounting activities that provide high quality, efficient, effective, and accurate financial services to all campus constituents. This team provides timely and accurate financial reporting that will withstand audits and provide reliable and meaningful information to both internal and external stakeholders. Controller operations include campus accounting and financial reporting (excluding budget and decision support), financial statement external audit management, payroll operations, tax compliance, and capital asset accounting.
Position Overview
The Tax Accountant is professional administrative and tax accounting work and is responsible for the supervision and administration of various taxes in compliance with federal and state requirements. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Tax. The Tax Accountant is responsible for directing day-to-day tax accounting activities including the hiring of staff, assigning work priorities, training and development of staff.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree in Accounting and have one year of income tax or related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
Thorough knowledge of Texas rules and regulations related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
Knowledge of federal and state tax codes, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) Skill in making mathematical calculations and computations with a high degree of accuracy.
Ability to work independently to complete tasks and projects through accurate, professional and timely completion without follow-up from others.
Ability to plan and conceptualize and make sound business decisions.
Well-developed presentation, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations orally and in writing.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact successfully with management, faculty, staff and students.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed
Preferred Qualifications
Current Texas CPA license or ability to gain via reciprocity.
UBIT reporting knowledge and experience.
Experience with tax treaties.
Ability to research tax issues and apply IRS and Department of Revenue guidance to specific situations.
Experience working at an institution of higher education.
Knowledge of PeopleSoft HCM Financial software.
Advanced MS Excel skills.
Ability to coordinate and lead continuous improvement projects through process improvement methodology to quantitatively and qualitatively improve cost, quality and service
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Job Duties
- % - Perform tax accounting activities related to the preparation of federal, state and local income tax returns and/or the financial statement accounting for income taxes. - ()
- % - Provide guidance on the preparation of Form 990T Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT), Forms W2, W4, W8, W9, 1099, 1042, and other federal and state forms. - ()
- % - Assist in gathering documentation and preparing responses related to tax audits. - ()
- % - Determine foreign vendor withholding requirements and communicate the requirements to accounts payable. - ()
- % - Coordinate with purchasing, payroll, human resources, and office of general counsel on independent contractor determinations to ensure compliance with IRS, TWC and other federal and state worker classification rules. - ()
- % - Assist Nonresident Alien employees and vendors complete vendor profiles and explain Nonresident Alien treaties and withholding requirements to others. - ()
- % - Audit withholding account balances and ensure timely deposits with the IRS. - ()
