Department Summary

Advising Services at the University of North Texas provides proactive, holistic academic advising and student success support for exploratory, transitioning, and prospective students. The department advances student achievement through innovative initiatives in proactive advising and data-informed practices, while fostering advisor excellence through professional development and advisor training.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for providing guidance to students by appraising their interests, aptitudes, and abilities to develop a career path and degree fit. Connects students with available resources for academic success and personal/professional development. This position assists in implementing programs related to student success and retention. This position also advises prospective students.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
• Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory.
• Strong presentation, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
• Strong counseling skills including career development and group facilitation.
• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to work independently.
• Remains active in professional development.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience counseling undecided or exploring-major students, providing guidance, decision-making support, and pathways toward academic clarity and degree progression.

Experience supporting prospective and transfer students, including navigating credit articulation, onboarding, and successful transition into the university environment.

Experience working with multiple departments and/or committee work.

Demonstrates strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently.

Demonstrates strong communication skills, verbal and written.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

 

Job Duties

  • Presents academic information at new student orientations, exploring majors workshops, and on-campus events. 
  • Counsels students regarding Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirements and TSI class placement. 
  • Counsels students regarding university requirements and individual program requirements including the applicability of transfer credits in a timely and professional manner. 
  • Provides training, and direction to Academic Advisors or other staff as assigned. 
  • Implements programs related to student success and retention. 
  • Assists with the development retention and completion initiatives. 
  • Consults on difficult issues or expectations related to assisting students. 
  • Counsels students regarding information about their interests, aptitudes, abilities, and other personal characteristics. 
  • Advising and presentations at UNT Frisco.

Monday – Friday, 8am-5pm, occasional evening or weekend event participation
