Department Summary
The Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) is a unique residential program for high school-aged Texas students who are high achievers and interested in mathematics and science. While living on campus in McConnell Hall, students in this two-year program complete a rigorous academic curriculum of college coursework at the University of North Texas (UNT). Instruction is by university faculty.
Position Overview
Provide academic assistance to individual students at the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate). Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory. Strong presentation, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. Strong counseling skills including career development and group facilitation. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to work independently. Remains active in professional development.

Job Duties
- Contact faculty to obtain course syllabi, and create calendar of assignments and exam dates each semester. During Fall, Spring, Summer semesters, collect students grades from faculty in order to monitor students academic progress.
- Contact incoming students during the Summer prior to their attendance in order to build rapport. Monitor students class attendance and report absences to parents and Associate Dean when necessary. Identify students having academic difficulties and provide information relative to time management and study skills. Communicate with parents to discuss students academic progress when necessary. Prepare and submit weekly and end-of-semester reports to Associate Dean of TAMS concerning students academic progress and attendance. Provide academic advising to students regarding course selection to ensure students enroll in required courses in order to complete their TAMS curriculum.
- Provide advising and writing assistance to second-year students during the college application process. Each Summer in collaboration with the Associate Dean and other Academic Counselors, plan and conduct the Early Start program for incoming TAMS students.
- Maintain high ethical standards and collegiality within TAMS-Honors. Attend and/or provide support for various events in TAMS-Honors, including but not limited to: (1) Summer Orientation each June; (2) Fall Orientation each August; (3) TAMS Seminar; (4) PSAT administration; (5) Competition-level tests (e.g., Olympiad, AMC, etc); (6) TAMS Convocation each Fall; (7) TAMS Commencement each Spring; and, (8) Scholars Day and the Medallion Ceremony (Honors).

Lifting and Moving objects up to 20 pounds.
Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
