Department Summary
The Higher Education Program is housed in the Department of Counseling and Higher Education within the UNT College of Education. The program’s mission is to improve education and promote human development by providing learners with academic experiences and a wide range of scholarly perspectives that challenge their creativity and intellect, integrating knowledge, professional competence, experience, and imagination to develop researchers and practitioners who serve as effective leaders in institutions of higher education.
The Bill J. Priest Center for Community College Education works in conjunction with the Higher Education Program to create a pathway for community college leadership. The Center was named in honor of Dr. Bill J. Priest, the founding Chancellor of the Dallas County Community College District and the inspiration for the Bill J. Priest Center at UNT. Dr. Priest served as Chancellor from 1965 to 1981. He is credited with building the community college system in Dallas.
UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.
Position Overview
The Executive in Residence (EiR) will contribute to the broader mission of the Higher Education Program. As the Assistant Director of the Bill J. Priest Center for Community College Education, they will also have an impact on community college education through strategic engagement with schools across the state of Texas and various national organizations. This position will serve as a strong advocate for student development and community college leadership through various initiatives and partnerships. The individual who fills this role will be a full-time member of the faculty of the Higher Education Program. This position is not eligible for tenure.
Position duties include:
● Teaching courses in all three graduate programs in higher education (M.Ed., Ed.D., Ph.D.).
● Lead instructor for community college leadership courses such as the History and Philosophy of the Community College.
● Teaching courses in face-to-face, online, and hybrid modalities
● Advising Ed.D. students through doctoral coursework
● Supervising Ed.D. proposals and dissertations
● Developing a scheduled course for doctoral students who are actively writing dissertations and regularly teaching this course
● Serving as a point of contact between university faculty and community college professionals. Includes periodic travel to community colleges throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth region and the state of Texas.
● Building relationships with community colleges in the region to strengthen partnerships that connect research, professional practice, and leadership development. Identify and translate relevant research into actionable steps that can inform institutional planning, policy development, and decision-making. Share recommendations through Center events and communications.
● Developing pathways for community college professionals to pursue advanced education and prepare for future leadership roles.
● Supporting the Buchholz Professor of Community College Leadership with event coordination, including the Texas Higher Education Law Conference, invited speakers, and workshops focused on the community college sector.
● Other academic duties to fulfill the missions of the Program, Department, and College
Minimum Qualifications
A doctorate in Higher Education with knowledge of the community college sector.
Additional consideration may be given for equivalent applied experience in accordance with faculty credentialing guidelines. Meets the performance expectations related to the workload outlined in UNT Policy 06.005.
Preferred Qualifications
● Two or more years of experience in community college leadership, preferably at or beyond the Director, Dean, or Division lead level.
● Record of practical scholarship with a focus on community colleges
● Experience in academic advising, especially at the graduate level on dissertation committees.
● Experience teaching online and familiarity with learning management systems such as Canvas.
● Experience planning, executing, and assessing large and small-scale programs and events
