The UNT TRIO Programs house the following TRIO Programs: Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Student Support Services. All programs are funded through the U.S. Department of Education. The UNT Talent Search Program serves students in the Gainesville ISD for this position.
Position Overview
This position is for a college prep advisor who will be located in Gainesville, TX at Gainesville High School serving as the UNT Talent Search Advisor on a daily basis. The candidate will recruit and serve approximately 230 high school students assisting them with academic skill development and college/career exploration and choosing a course of postsecondary education. This is a TRIO Talent Search Program position.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in related field and one year of related experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent skills in connecting with students and providing individualized services for them. Ability to provide workshops to students, individually and in group settings. Leadership skills in working directly with a assistant student employee. Experience in networking across departments and programs. Strong organizational skills and ability to simultaneously execute multiple projects. Excellent verbal and written communication, and computer skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Current experience with the Texas college admission and financial aid process. Will give preference to candidates with TRIO experience, either as staff or participant. Preference given to candidates familiar with the Gainesville community. Preference given to candidates with success or experience in overcoming barriers similar to the TRIO target population.

Job Duties:
- Provide information about Talent Search to the community including school administrators, students, and community organizations. Nurture strong working relationships within the school staff.
- Recruitment and Documentation: Recruit and retain a minimum of 230 eligible participants providing them with at least 2 Talent Search services per school semester. Document all services and student information into the Talent Search student database, including necessary files and documents as per the TRIO guidelines.
- Prepare and administer lessons in the areas of college and career exploration, academic success, financial literacy, life skills, following the approved TS curriculum guide. Develop connections with students by taking time during one on one meetings with them.
- Coordinate and participate in college and career field trips or events for participants during the school year and summer.
- Participate in staff professional trainings, Talent Search staff meetings in Denton, TX, and maintain good communication between team members and supervisor.
- Meet with senior students on a consistent basis to guide them to successful high school graduation, college acceptance, college enrollment and receipt of financial aid. This includes assistance in successful completion of college admission test prep, resume-writing, essay-writing, FAFSA submittal, scholarship app submittals and all final steps to secure college enrollment.
- Responsible for ensuring that TS Objectives are met for assigned student caseload and documentation is accurate.
