Department Summary

Our research mission is driven in part by particular strengths represented by five primary centers/institutes: The Center for Healthy Aging, The Institute for Translational  Research, The Institute for Health Disparities, The North Texas Eye Research Institute, and the Center for Human Identification. Within the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Genetics (MIG), there are twenty-three full-time faculty and two adjunct faculty members with diverse research interests spanning molecular genetics, cellular immunology, microbiology, cancer, and health disparities and supported by more than $9 million in federal grant funding. We foster a highly collaborative and collegial environment in which the faculty, trainees, and staff work together to advance innovative, cutting-edge scientific discovery related to human health.
 
The department provides high quality training for students interested in careers in biomedical research or medicine. The goals of our graduate program are (1) to provide a broad and sound education in microbiology, immunology, and genetics of human disease, and (2) to provide rigorous research training in an environment dedicated to advancing biomedical science. The department has numerous trainees including  DO/PhD, PhD, and MS students as well as postdoctoral fellows. The trainees and faculty in the department are a cohesive group from diverse backgrounds which fosters scientific innovation and discovery. We support graduate training programs in genetics, cell biology, immunology, microbiology, biochemistry, and cancer biology. Our faculty and trainees also take full advantage of the tremendous breadth of expertise and knowledge across the UNT Health Science Center (HSC).

Position Overview

The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Genetics at the University of North Texas Health Science is searching for a full-time, 12-month, faculty position at the rank of Research Assistant Professor to conduct research into molecular basis and therapeutic approaches for cancer metastasis, with a focus on breast, prostate and colon cancers. The faculty member is expected to seek extramural funding for the research program, publish data in high quality peer-reviewed journals and provide training and mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students, and early career post-doctoral research associates.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of PhD in biological and biomedical sciences
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a post-doctoral fellow or early career scientist
  • Experience with molecular biological and biochemical technologies, and therapeutic approaches to cancer therapy
  • Commitment to the Core Values and Behaviors of the UNT System.

  • Skill in managing one’s own time and the time of others.
  • Knowledge of office procedures and of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and arithmetic
  • Ability to work effectively within a complex organization structure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology or a related field of study
  • Track record of publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience in writing and obtaining grants (seed, foundation, R-type)
  • Active record of mentorship, research and scholarship
