Department Summary
The Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) is a unique residential program for high school-aged Texas students who are high achievers and interested in mathematics and science. While living on campus in McConnell Hall, students in this two-year program complete a rigorous academic curriculum of college coursework at the University of North Texas (UNT). Instruction is by university faculty. Students enjoy many of the activities of high school and the company of age mates who are intellectual peers.
Position Overview
The Senior Program Project Coordinator supports the academic programs of the TAMS program and helps students in their transition from the TAMS program into a pursuit of their baccalaureate degree at UNT or other institutions.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Higher Education, Psychology, Business, Data Science and four years' of professional related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to adapt to program/project and incorporate creativity and originality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience advising students interested in pursuing baccalaureate degrees in STEM fields.
- Familiarity with STEM degree programs offered at public and private universities in Texas, as well as out-of-state universities and international institutions.
- Teaching experience in grades 912 and/or higher education.
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Texas Driver's License (must be obtained within 30 days of starting the position)
Job Duties:
- Maintain reference library for students that includes manuals on writing; guides on interviewing, the various types of college applications and their key differences, and the various types of admissions decisions offered by higher education institutions; and, guides to financial aid and scholarships.
- Create and/or update, collect, and utilize student feedback forms, peer evaluation forms, and parent evaluation forms when advising students and writing letters of recommendation for students.
- Complete the school counselors' portion of students college applications, and submit the counselor's recommendation/Secondary School Report, and midyear reports as required by certain universities.
- Maintain record of schools and scholarships to which students apply and then, ultimately attend and receive.
- Update and send TAMS school profile as well as verification of graduation letters to institutions students decide to attend after TAMS.
- Oversee National Merit Scholarship Corporation application process, including assisting students with writing personal statements as well as coordinating entry of student's curriculum and GPA, and completing the TAMS endorsement and recommendation.
- In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Academics and the requisite academic counselor, deliver various presentations during TAMS Seminar meetings during Fall and Spring semesters relative to the college application process. Plan, schedule, and teach HNRS 1900Z each Spring semester for second semester, first-year students in order to prepare them for writing and communicating their ideas during the college application process. Assist students in writing personal statements, essays, and short answers to accompany their college applications. Explain the process of how universities interpret, and process courses completed at UNT and/or other institutions. Educate students regarding scholarship granting entities and organizations and assist students in applying for scholarships and other financial aid, including the writing of essays or short answer responses.
- Communicate with students' parents as necessary during the college advising and application process.
- Organize virtual and on campus visits by universities recruiting TAMS students. Maintain close communication and partnerships with regional, state, and national recruiting and admissions organizations. Build and maintain close relationships with recruiters and admissions officers at most four-year Texas and out-of-state universities. Attend various state and national conferences virtual and/or in person relative to academic advising and college admissions advising
- Attend and assists with various TAMS events, including but not limited to TAMS Convocation (Fall) and TAMS graduation (Spring). Maintain collegiality with personnel in TAMS Honors. Maintain high ethical standards in all duties.
