Department Summary
The UNT System Controller leads financial management and accounting activities that provide high quality, efficient, effective, and accurate financial services to all campus constituents. This team provides timely and accurate financial reporting that will withstand audits and provide reliable and meaningful information to both internal and external stakeholders. Controller operations include campus accounting and financial reporting (excluding budget and decision support), financial statement external audit management, payroll operations, tax compliance, and capital asset accounting.
Position Overview
Under the general direction of the Payroll Manager, performs payroll administration for all monthly, semimonthly, hourly, and supplemental payrolls for the four institutions (UNT, System, Dallas, HSC); maintains employee pay records, preparation for payroll runs, and creates payroll reports; analyzes complex payroll and benefits issues/errors, proposes solutions to address customer needs; acts as a functional expert.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures affecting the maintenance of accounting records and automated accounting systems.
- Ability to interpret and apply accounting theory; to work accurately with numerical detail; to analyze, consolidate, and interpret accounting data; and to communicate effectively.
- Experience working in one or more functional areas of accounting Strong working knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, and accounting practices
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills Ability to analyze, consolidate, and present accounting data in clear concise form
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of principles and procedures of general and governmental accounting as applicable to processing of payroll.
- Working knowledge of University payroll processing.
- Working knowledge of the State of Texas Working knowledge of PeopleSoft.
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Job Duties:
- Processes monthly, semimonthly, hourly, and supplemental payroll in PeopleSoft North American Payroll
- Maintains employee pay data, records pay data changes from source documents and interprets University policies and procedures, and State and Federal regulations affecting payroll procedures
- Reports data; reviews and ensures accurate computation of pay, conducts appropriate audits to ensure data integrity and compliance, and coordinates with internal departments as appropriate to resolve discrepancies
- Responsible for auditing monthly and supplemental payroll reports, and resolutions of complex payroll issues to ensure that accurate data is reflected in the employee database and payments of salary and wages are made in an accurate and timely manner
- Provides customer service across the four institutions; analyzes and recommends solutions to address customer issues related to payroll
- Represents the organization by utilizing effective communication and customer service skills to serve customers and provide information and updates on changes and processes; provides helpful information and anticipates needs of organization to keep customers up to date and help them utilize the system
- Analyze error reports for payroll calculation (monthly, semimonthly, hourly, and supplemental)
- Conduct retroactive adjustments for salary/wages, deductions (general and or benefits) or overpayments
- Process vacation lump sum payments

Generally Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
