Department Summary

International Affairs is a guide and champion for campus internationalization at the University of North Texas. It is our mission to support the university’s global endeavors and international initiatives. This position will be a part of the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) team. The ISSS Office at the University of North Texas provides compassionate immigration advice and support to UNT’s 12,000 international students and scholars, and alumni.

Position Overview

This position provides leadership in ISSS by leading the design of comprehensive staff training programs, directing front desk operations, supervising an assigned team of FT & PT staff, and fostering a culture of continuous professional growth and excellent customer service, ensuring all ISSS staff members are equipped to provide high-quality, consistent support and advising to international students and scholars and the UNT campus community, while promoting compliance and institutional values.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field and five years of professional related work experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Thorough knowledge of international sponsored student advising topics and scholarship requirements.
* Ability to plan, organize, implement and direct the work of others.
* Thorough knowledge and understanding of F1 student immigration regulations, the federal SEVIS database, and Sunapsis Case Management System. These skills can be obtained through previous on the job training.
* Ability to serve as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) and Designated School Official (DSO) as defined by the Department of State and Homeland Security
* Ability to effectively communicate complex rules to a variety of customers.
* Ability to work effectively with administrators, faculty and staff across campus.
* Effective written and oral communication skills.
* Demonstrated problem solving, time management, and process improvement skills.
* Ability to work both independently and in team settings.
* Strong computer skills, such as word processing and database management.
* Ability to plan, organize and effectively manage multiple assignments.
* Working knowledge of business practices and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters degree and two years of advising international students on complex immigration cases and customer service and training experience. Experience with SEVIS, Sunapsis, and PeopleSoft. A highly qualified candidate will possess training and customer service experience in a high-volume setting, time management, communication, and presentation skills, the ability to relate to a large population of students and employees, demonstrated leadership and team-building experience, and significant cross-cultural communication skills.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Must meet federal requirements to serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).

Job Duties

  • Management and Leadership: Direct supervision and management of an assigned team 
  • Partner Communication: Advising and communicating with ISSS partners regarding a wide variety of requirements, policies, and processes. 
  • Compliance and Data Integrity: Working closely with ISSS personnel across teams to maintain the accuracy and integrity of all data in ISSS systems (e.g. Sunapsis, SEVIS) and federal/state filings. 
  • Cross Training and Process Improvement: Developing deep familiarity with all areas of ISSS operations and engaging with process improvement projects throughout the unit. The Asst Director, working in tandem with ISSS Leadership, is responsible for suggesting and implementing training for process improvements to ensure ISSS maintains accessible, efficient, and robust processes to meet the needs of UNT’s growing international student & scholar population. 
  • Continuing Education and Outreach: Liaising with various colleagues on and off campus and proactively engaging in continuing education and professional development. 
  • Other duties as assigned including serving as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) as needed.
