Founded in 1977, the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) of the University of North Texas (UNT) has helped thousands of students achieve English mastery for degree study at UNT and other universities both in the U.S. and overseas. IELI has also provided extensive English Training programs internationally in China, Japan, Thailand, and Türkiye. IELI is under the governance of and works in close cooperation with the units of UNT's International Affairs.
Position Overview
The IELI Associate Director position plays a leadership role in the academic life and business operations of IELI. The position has four main functions:
- Academic and curriculum oversight including instructor support, assessment, and development of alternative delivery methods.
- Administration and operations including oversight of IELI enrollment management and student records.
- Student placement and progression within IELI.
- Assisting the Director in overall governance of and periodic reporting for IELI.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) or a closely related field, and a minimum of 5 years' of professional experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database and word processing software.
- Ability to operate personal computer with a general understanding of application software, and an understanding of the Internet.
- Ability to learn office and university specific software.
- Ability to provide outstanding customer and employee service.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
- Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
- Ability to set priorities and complete assignments on time.
- Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
- Ability to provide support for student development with a demonstrable concern for students.
- Ability to train, mentor, and assist instructors with established and innovative standards of instruction.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in TESL or a very closely related field.
- Working knowledge of second language teaching theories and practices and current activity in professional development.
- Knowledge of a second language.
- Administrative leadership experience in an academically oriented intensive English program.
- Ability and willingness to work occasionally on weekends and evenings, travel both domestically and internationally, and drive a UNT vehicle.

Job Duties:
Academic and Curriculum Oversight:
- Provide all instructors support, lead development of alternative instruction delivery and supplemental classes, oversee IELI curriculum revision and development, select new materials and textbooks when needed, assign classes to teachers, teach IELI classes if necessitated by program enrollment, and perform other duties as assigned.
Administration and Operations:
- Oversee work of and train staff in enrollment management and student records, orientation processes, and student academic advisement. Assist with administrative processes and in liaising with units outside of IELI, and perform other duties as assigned.
Assessment:
- Oversee ITA assessment program and training, coordinate and implement placement test, lead development of new assessment delivery, train new instructors in testing, supervise administration of program level tests and compilation of test results and statistics, and perform other duties as assigned.
Assist Director:
- Proactively plan with director and assist with overall governance of IELI, serve as directors proxy with onsite issues and meetings in directors' absence, assist with project management and writing for periodic reports, help with special programming, and perform other duties as assigned. Position requires a flexible work schedule to include some evenings and weekends, the ability to travel domestically and internationally, and maintain a driver's license.
