Department Summary

The Office of Budget and Planning of UNT-Dallas facilitates the optimal use of university financial resources and provides timely, useful budget information to the University community and its stakeholders. The purpose of the Office of Budget and Planning is to assist the University administration with guidance in decision-making, financial planning, and properly managing the annual operating budget. We are determined to provide resource planning to enhance the concepts of budget and planning for all departments to ensure that all staff/faculty are financially aligned with the University goals and policies. 

Position Overview

The Budget Analyst provides technical assistance in the development, monitoring, and adjustment of University budgets. Work involves the collection, organization, and evaluation of information and the compilation of external and internal reports and analyses. This position is responsible for setting up and maintaining controls and records of financial transactions. Duties and tasks are frequently nonroutine. Resolves most questions, including some where only limited standardization exists. Work is performed under general supervision of the Budget Director. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in business or accounting or related field and two years' of experience working with budget related information; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of (or ability to rapidly assimilate and retain) University operating procedures, organization and policies. Knowledge of business principles, practices and techniques. Knowledge of electronic information systems and accounting systems. Ability to work accurately with numerical detail consistently and to perform financial operations legibly. Experience managing budget information and accurately recording financial transactions. Ability to keep complex records Ability to assemble and organize data of complex nature, to prepare and submit reports in acceptable formats. Ability to read and analyze fiscal management information and to assist in formulating solutions to problems. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Strong communications skills. Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in accounting, finance, business, or related field Experience in Peoplesoft, Axiom, ABEST, Power BI, and/or SIRS.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

 

Job Duties:

  • Provides support and training to campus departments in the access and interpretation of budget reports and with resolving errors. Monitor Budget Office email box and coordinate with departments on questions/concerns.
  • Prepares routine and ad hoc reports and reconciliations and performs research as needed in order to take the corrective action required to resolve any issues found.
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual operating budget, Legislative Budget Requests, quarterly budget reports, and various other external documents.
  • Processes and assists campus departments in processing budget transfers/ABAs, journal entries/IDTs, and chart field requests.
  • Assists with ePAR review, approvals, and position data management. - ()
  • Provides guidance to campus in creating invoices for internal and external charges and assists with verifying that payments have been received.
  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of budget analyses and varied periodic and special reports used for internal control and decision-making. 
  • Assist on a variety of special projects and other duties as assigned and maintains confidentiality.
  • Prepares and sends out routine and as needed campus communications. This includes year end communications regarding outstanding encumbrances and payment deadline.
