Department Summary
As a department within Student Affairs, the University of North Texas at Dallas Counseling & Wellness Center offers services to all enrolled students. The UNT Dallas Counseling & Wellness Center provides short-term individual counseling, group counseling, wellness programming, crisis intervention, and case management services. The UNT Dallas Counseling & Wellness Center offers a holistic approach to providing services to students, and is committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and confirming environments for all.
Position Overview
The counselor's primary responsibility is to provide psychological counseling to all students at UNT Dallas with a focus on STEM students. These services include psychological assessment, crisis intervention, short term individual and group psychotherapy, and referrals to community providers. In addition, the counselor participates in on-going collaboration with other members of the Counseling and Wellness Staff in providing psycho-educational programming and outreach services to the student population. The counselor may also provide consultation to faculty, staff, and student leaders as directed by the Assistant Director of Counseling and Wellness Services. This position requires some evening and Saturday availability.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in Psychology, Counseling, Clinical or Educational Psychology or related field. Must be licensed by the State of Texas or have the ability to obtain appropriate licensure within twenty-four months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of professional counseling practices, policies, and procedures.
- Strong oral and written communications skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a university setting.
- Experience with assessing and treating dual diagnosis clients.
- Experience providing crisis intervention, treatment for alcohol/drug use and eating disorders.
- Excellent assessment skills and an ability to relate to a diverse student population.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.

Job Duties:
- Conduct crisis intervention and assessment for students seeking counseling services.
- Deliver short-term individual and group psychotherapy.
- Provide psycho-educational workshops and out-reach programming regarding student development and psychological health.
- Manage referrals for mental health treatment as appropriate.
- Maintain thorough and up-to-date documentation of all clinical services.
- Provide ongoing consultation to staff, faculty, and student leaders as directed by Assistant Director of Counseling Services.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule:
Weekdays: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., occasional evening and Saturday
