Department Summary
The Institute for Translational Research is devoted to bringing novel diagnostics and interventions to patients and families suffering from neurodegenerative diseases, fostering translational research in neurodegenerative diseases at UNTHSC, and Create solutions for a healthier community. Our team spans basic "bench-top" science, clinical research, community-based research and clinical trials. Our translational approach is intended to foster discovery and expedite those discoveries toward the benefit of those suffering from brain disease. A particular emphasis of ITR is the development of personalized (or person-focused) medicine for Alzheimer's disease.
Position Overview
DDO is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Institute for Translational Research. The DDO will ensure that our institution’s administrative functions and operational strategies align with advancing knowledge, helping patients, and fostering research excellence. This role requires a dynamic leader with a deep understanding of the academic and research environment, exceptional management skills, and an ability to implement the strategy and vision of ITR as set by the Executive Director (ED) while ensuring operational efficiency. DDO reports directly to the ED and oversees overall management of all personnel, excluding other personnel reporting directly to the ED.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree and eight years of relevant experience.

- Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and solving complex operational problems
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, and the ability to translate data into clear and simple messages for a wide range of audiences
- Superb interpersonal skills, including the ability to generate respect and trust from colleagues, direct reports, and external constituents
- Ability to maintain calm and steadiness during times of crisis or stress
- Ability to provide long-term, inspirational vision while simultaneously creating pragmatic solutions to day-to-day problems

Job Duties:
- Ensures the efficient execution of the business plan of ITR and is responsible for establishing and implementing business standards for the Institute
- Facilitate the successful operational performance of the institution as well as providing leadership, strategic vision, long range planning and coordination of all budget, operational, and technology related functions
- The DDO will be charged with implementing Institute-wide goal setting, performance management and annual operations planning.
- DDO will collaborate with the ED and the others on the Executive team in driving operations strategy and translating strategy into actionable steps for growth
- DDO will analyze internal operations and identify areas for process improvement with a focus on increasing operational efficiency and effectiveness
- DDO will oversee the hiring process and overall management of all personnel, excluding any other personnel reporting directly to the ED
- Support, mentor and develop leaders who possess skills and perspectives necessary and consistent with an institution wide succession planning process, to possibly assume this role
- Performs additional duties as required in support of the stated purpose, mission, vision and values of the Institute and HSC
