Department Summary
Rec Sports provides programs and services to the university community. The goal is to provide a positive environment to assist those individuals in exploring and learning about recreation and fitness activities, in order to enhance a better quality of life and to become active members of the community. We employ approximately 250 students each year through various programs including intramural sports, informal recreation, group exercise, sport clubs, fitness, faculty/staff fitness, special events, outdoor pursuits and aquatics. Position Overview
This evening position is responsible for assisting in the overall coordination of the fitness program and supporting membership strategy, tracking, reporting, and outreach at both the UNT Denton and Frisco Landing Fitness Center locations. The role includes recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising all fitness employees; coordinating group fitness schedules; teaching group fitness classes and personal training clients; planning and executing fitness programs and events; ensuring safety and accident prevention; maintaining equipment; and overseeing staff administration.
This role also plays a key part in member recruitment, engagement, and retention strategies—including developing membership drives and campaigns, creating and leading outreach events, and tracking/reporting memberships. Evening availability is required, as a majority of responsibilities—such as staff supervision, program delivery, and member engagement—occur during late afternoon and evening hours.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related field and two years of professional related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Hold one or more specialty group fitness certifications such as Zumba, Yoga or Kickboxing. Experience in a collegiate recreational sports program. Experience in supervising student staff. Bachelors or Masters degree in Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Recreation or related field.
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Must hold a group fitness or personal training certification in ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA, Cooper or other National Level certification. Must have a willingness to get an alternate fitness certification within 1 year of employment.
Job Duties
- Programming: Assist in implementing a variety of fitness programs and events at UNT Denton, across campus and at Frisco Landing. Work with other Rec Sports program areas and other departments across campus to collaborate on events/programs.
- Staff Administration: Assist in hiring, training, scheduling and evaluating staff for the fitness program, including weight room supervisors, Frisco weight room supervisors, personal trainers and group fitness instructors. Follow university procedures for hiring full time and part time staff. Know and follow the student employment policy. Assist in developing and implementing new program assessment tools to assess program needs, participant satisfaction and overall feedback.
- Facility Management: Assist with the day to day operations of the group fitness studios, weight room and Frisco Landing Fitness Center. Ensure that the studios remain clean, all equipment is stored properly, announcements and marketing are up to date and issues are reported in a timely fashion. In the weight room and at Frisco Landing, ensure that cleaning expectations are being met by student staff and that equipment is aligned and stored properly.
- Teaching & Training: Maintain regular group fitness classes on the schedule, and substitute and take on personal training clients as needed. Coordinate and lead group fitness instructor (ACE) and personal trainer (ACE) prep courses. Provide staff development and training opportunities for student staff each semester.
- Fiscal Management: Assist with purchasing equipment and supplies for the fitness program and complete payroll for student staff.
- Risk Management: Assist in ensuring that all spaces and equipment used by the fitness program are in safe and usable condition. Work with the appropriate maintenance staff/company/facility manager to ensure that necessary repairs are made. Obtain and maintain American Red CrossCPro Instructor Certification. Lead courses to train staff in emergency response and how to diffuse difficult situations. Ensure all staff maintain proper certifications applicable to their position.
- UNT Frisco: Travel to UNT Frisco campus to assist in oversight of facility and provide fitness opportunities to students.
- Communication: Communicates in a clean and concise manner that helps the listener avoid confusion. Interacts with others in a way that builds relationships. Responds to verbal and written responses in a prompt and timely manner.
- Memberships: Assist in developing, implementing and leading Rec Sports member recruitment, engagement and retention strategies. Assist in tracking and reporting membership numbers. Coordinate with marketing to develop membership drives and campaigns to increase memberships. Create and implement special events, Bring Fitness To You events (lunch & learns, stretch breaks, group fitness classes for departments/organizations) and promotional activities.
