As the largest self-supported food service department in North Texas, UNT Dining Services is setting the standard for campus dining. With five Dining Halls, more than 20 retail locations, an upscale restaurant, a hydroponic garden, a central scratch bakery, and full-service catering, the department is led by a team of professionally trained chefs and hospitality experts. UNT is recognized as a national leader in university dining, known for its innovative, trendsetting approach and award-winning culinary talent.

UNT Dining Services is home to Mean Greens Café, the nation’s first 100% vegan collegiate dining hall, and Kitchen West, Texas’ first and only university dining hall certified Free From™ the Big 8 food allergens and gluten. In 2021, UNT introduced Eagle Landing, the university’s first standalone dining hall, inspired by urban food halls and featuring seven distinct restaurant concepts—all available for a single Meal Plan swipe.

Recognized for excellence, UNT was ranked No. 2 nationwide for best college food by Delish.com. The department is also the proud recipient of the prestigious Loyal E. Horton Award and the Vegan Recipe Award from the National Association of College and University Food Services. As a founding member of the Menus of Change University Research Collaborative, UNT plays an active role in pioneering research on plant-forward diets, food waste reduction, and consumer food choices, all while advancing the principles of healthy, sustainable menus.

Position Overview

The Food Service Manager plays a key leadership role in supporting the University of North Texas’ mission by delivering a high-quality campus dining experience. This position oversees all kitchen and dining operations within West Dining, an Allergen-Friendly dining hall designed to provide safe, inclusive meal options for students with food allergies and specialized dietary needs.

The manager ensures that West Dining maintains a culture of culinary excellence, exceptional customer service, and operational integrity while supporting a service model centered on safety, transparency, and nutrition. They cultivate a welcoming and efficient environment where every student, faculty member, and guest is treated with respect and hospitality.

By upholding rigorous standards for food quality, allergen control, safety, and cleanliness, including strict adherence to HACCP guidelines and all Standard Operating Procedures. The Food Service Manager ensures that every visit to West Dining meets or exceeds expectations and supports UNT’s commitment to providing accessible and inclusive dining experiences.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in related field and two years of experience in food service management; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of food preparation and food service management in a large food service unit, employee health, kitchen cleanliness, and sanitation requirements, hazards to human life and health that can occur from improper food preservation and service, kitchen equipment, kitchen implements, and advanced food preparation and processing procedures. Skill in the preparation and service of food, and service etiquette. Skill in training, supervising, and evaluating the work of subordinates. Ability to maintain time and record keeping. Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed. Rigidity with compliance to documented service and production standards. Ability to identify and seek help when needed.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
Two years of Food Service management experience.
Great work ethics.
Outgoing personality.
Eager to excel and grow with our exciting UNT Residential Dining operations.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

 

Job Duties

  • Oversees food quality and presentation consistently aligned with established standards and customer expectations in assigned area. Develop and implement strategies to enhance service quality and refine food offerings based on supervisory feedback.
  • Provide comprehensive training by equipping staff with the skills needed for exceptional service and food safety. Creates a collaborative and supportive team culture that encourages open communication and employee engagement. 
  • Adheres to all University policies, health codes, and safety standards, regularly reviewing practices to ensure adherence.

Physical Requirements

Communicating with others to exchange information.
Lifting and moving objects up to 100 pounds or more.
Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
