As a department within Student Affairs, the University of North Texas at Dallas Counseling & Wellness Center offers services to all enrolled students. The UNT Dallas Counseling & Wellness Center provides short-term individual counseling, group counseling, wellness programming, crisis intervention, and case management services. Position Overview

The University of North Texas at Dallas invites applications for the position of Intervention and Support Services Counselor.

The Intervention and Support Services Counselor plays a critical role in supporting student well-being, safety, and academic success by serving as a first responder to students navigating mental health crises, behavioral concerns, or complex life challenges. This position provides timely crisis response, coordinates care, and connects students with appropriate university and community-based resources.

This non-clinical, student-facing role focuses on proactive intervention and support. The Counselor manages a dynamic caseload of students of concern, assists in navigating campus systems, and provides follow-up to ensure continuity of care. The role works closely with Counseling & Wellness staff, the CARE Team, Student Affairs partners, and external providers to ensure a wraparound response to student needs.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Psychology, Counseling, Clinical or Educational Psychology or related field. Must be licensed by the State of Texas or have the ability to obtain appropriate licensure within twenty-four months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of case management principles, including assessment, care coordination, follow-up, and referral processes within higher education or human services settings.
• Understanding of behavioral health issues and crisis intervention strategies, including risk assessment and response protocols.
• Knowledge of campus and community resources, support services, and systems of care relevant to college student populations.
• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and empathetically with diverse populations, including students, faculty, and staff.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment while managing a dynamic caseload.
• Ability to establish and maintain professional, ethical, and respectful working relationships across a range of departments and disciplines.
• Proficient organizational and time management skills, including the ability to maintain accurate documentation and manage multiple priorities.
• Knowledge of FERPA, HIPAA, and confidentiality standards applicable to student support services.
• Understanding of safety and crisis response protocols in a university or comparable setting.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience providing case management or crisis intervention services in a university, college, or comparable setting.
• Background in clinical counseling, social work, or behavioral health services, particularly with young adult populations.
• Experience supporting individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns, including making appropriate referrals and coordinating follow-up care.
• Demonstrated ability to respond to students in distress, including those experiencing mental health crises, food/housing insecurity, or safety concerns.
• Strong assessment skills and a trauma-informed approach to working with a diverse and historically underserved student population.
• Experience collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams (e.g., CARE/BIT teams, student affairs professionals, faculty) in support of student success.
• Familiarity with FERPA, HIPAA, and relevant laws and ethical guidelines governing student support and behavioral health services.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

• Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, or related mental health field REQUIRED.
• Must hold an active Texas license in one of the following areas or be eligible to obtain licensure within 24 months of employment in one of the following:
  
  
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC or LPC-A)
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW or LMSW in clinical supervision)
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT or LMFT-A)
  • Licensed Psychological Associate (LPA)

Job Duties:

• Provides timely and comprehensive case management for students experiencing varying levels of concern or crisis, including academic distress, financial hardship, mental health challenges, safety concerns, and social/family disruptions. Coordinates care plans, follows up regularly, and ensures continuity of support.
• Conducts assessments and triages student concerns to appropriate university and/or community resources. Facilitates referrals, warm hand-offs, and care coordination for students navigating complex systems.
• Serves as a core member of the UNT Dallas CARE Team and participates in Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) meetings. Provides updates on cases, offers expertise in behavioral health, and collaborates on action plans for students of concern.
• Supports and implements wellness outreach, prevention education, and early intervention efforts on campus, in collaboration with the Counseling & Wellness team. Co-develops training and awareness initiatives for students, staff, and faculty related to recognizing and responding to students in distress.
• Maintains accurate, timely, and confidential documentation in accordance with departmental standards, FERPA, and other applicable laws and policies. Participates in data tracking and reporting related to case management trends.
• Assists students in identifying and navigating both on-campus and off-campus support services. When appropriate, advocates on behalf of students to reduce barriers to care and increase access to needed resources.
• Supports the Assistant Director of Counseling and Wellness with special projects, presentations, and department initiatives. May assist with supervision of interns or graduate assistants as needed.
• Participates in university committees, division-wide initiatives, professional development opportunities, and other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule:

Monday- Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm), some evenings and Saturday availability required
