Department Summary
The Department of Physiology and Anatomy is home to researchers with a wide variety of interests and approaches. The Department is truly integrative as all faculty are engaged in interdisciplinary studies that span molecular, cellular, systems and behavioral sciences, with strong traditions of excellence in the study of cardiovascular, renal and neural-humoral control systems. The research activities of many of our faculty and graduate students involve studies of normal physiology such as exercise and travel to altitude as well as pathophysiological states such as heart failure, hypertension, cardiopulmonary bypass surgery, diabetes, obesity and sleep apnea.
Position Overview
Works in scientific laboratory settings helping with animal handling, preparing for experiments, processing biological samples, maintaining lab equipment, and cleaning up after experiments.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms
- Ability to understand and follow detailed instructions
- Skill in recording and maintaining reports and details logs
- Knowledge of cleaning and sterilization best practices
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of experience in a basic science laboratory; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with mouse handling and husbandry.
- Basic skills in small animal surgery, recovery care, injections and sample collection.
- Excellent organizational skills for maintaining laboratory supplies, equipment, solutions, inventories.
- Basic skills in mathematical computations, operation of computers and standard computer programs.
- Some experience with immunohistochemistry, western blotting and cell culture techniques.
- Ability to communicate effectively and to train others.
- Ability to adapt and learn new techniques.

Job Duties:
- Maintains animal inventory, keeps stock and orders consumable supplies. Assists PI with animal surgeries, injections and other interventions. Manages and maintains rodent diets and treatments.
- Assists with biochemical analyses, data collection. Keeps computer operating systems functional with updates and modifications.
- Mixes water and detergents or acids in container to prepare cleaning solution according to specifications. Washes, rinses, and dries glassware and instruments. Scrubs shelves, tables and sinks. Sterilizes glassware and instruments. Fills tubes and bottles with specified solutions and applies identification labels.
- Maintains the laboratory and equipment in working and clean condition, laboratory compliance to safety regulations, records, supplies, samples in an organized manner.
Work Schedule:
Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm; occasional weekends
