Position Overview
The Police Sergeant supervises and directs University police officers, security guards, and others engaged in the protection and safeguarding of human lives and personal and public property for the UNT Dallas Police Department. The position is responsible for supervisory functions at the UNT Dallas Main campus and the UNT Dallas Law Center. The duties of this position include the supervision and responsibility for on-the-job training and orientation of newly hired officers. The exercise of independent judgment is expected within the limits of the provisions of traffic, civil and criminal law, University rules and regulations, and Police Department policies. The Police Sergeant may be assigned supervisory and/or administrative activities within a variety of police operations; including, patrol, criminal investigations, training, satellite locations, accreditation, administration, or other equivalent duties and responsibilities as determined by the Chief of Police consistent with department and university policies. Employees in this class are working supervisors and may perform duties the same or similar to their subordinates during the course of the workday.
Minimum Qualifications
Associates degree in relevant field and three (3) years of experience as a commissioned Police Officer; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
•Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university;
•A minimum of one year with UNT Dallas Police Department; another higher education police department; or equivalent police agency
•Advanced Licensure as a Police Officer from TCOLE
•Basic Police Instructor License from TCOLE
•Specialized experience, licenses or certifications in investigations, training, accreditation, administration or other applicable areas related to areas of assignment
•Exercise good judgment and to utilize tact and courtesy when working with the public under frequently stressful conditions
•Able to react quickly and effectively under emergency (high stress) situations
•Demonstrate professional demeanor and excellent oral communication skills
•Ability to formulate effective solutions to problem situations in accordance with statutes, regulations, and training. Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed
•Lateral entry incumbents must be either currently employed as a police officer in Texas or other state or federal jurisdiction acceptable to the university or have less than a twelve (12) month break in service
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Active peace officer license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement; Reserve officer status does not count as active law enforcement experience. Intermediate Police Officer License; meet all minimum requirements UNT Dallas Police Officer classification description; work performance which meets or exceeds acceptable performance standards based upon current and prior year performance evaluations; and possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities
