Department Summary
The University of North Texas at Dallas New Student Orientation program is seeking New Student Orientation Leaders. The Orientation Leaders will perform a variety of duties and support assignments with well-defined instructions and guidelines provided by the Coordinator of New Student Orientation and New Student Orientation Student Executive Team. Under the direct supervision of the Coordinator of New Student Orientation, Orientation Leaders will serve as a resource and mentor for first-time college freshmen and transfer students throughout the orientation season.
Position Overview
The University of North Texas at Dallas New Student Orientation program is seeking New Student Orientation Leaders. The Orientation Leaders will perform a variety of duties and support assignments with well-defined instructions and guidelines provided by the Coordinator of New Student Orientation and New Student Orientation Student Executive Team. Under the direct supervision of the Coordinator of New Student Orientation, Orientation Leaders will serve as a resource and mentor for first-time college freshmen and transfer students throughout the orientation season.
Minimum Qualifications
Currently enrolled UNT Dallas, UNT Dallas College of Law, HSC or UNT student in good standing and making satisfactory progress toward completion of a degree or certification program. Applicants must possess the following:
• Must be present at ALL orientation sessions, preparation, and training days.
• Ability to read and understand written and oral instructions, as well as carry them out with little to no redirection.
• Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude, high energy, and strong work ethic.
• Ability to communicate effectively in front of large groups.
• Ability to perform work involving standing, stooping, bending, operating office equipment, or lifting items weighing up to 40 pounds.
• Must have the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Excellent customer service skills, as well as effective oral and written communication skills.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer applications (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Some knowledge of office practices and procedures.
• Demonstrated ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions accurately.
• Good interpersonal skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural and social backgrounds.
• Responsible, reliable and punctual.
• Ability to learn assigned tasks readily, to adhere to prescribed routines, and to develop some skill in the operation of common office equipment.
• Ability to be present and participate at all orientation sessions and preparation days.
• Minimum GPA of 2.0.
• Ability to adhere to a strict confidentiality policy and the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
• Knowledge of appropriate safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
• Serve as a resource for incoming students and their guests by answering questions, assisting with directions, and helping them navigate their New Student Orientation session.
• Conduct small group discussions on transitioning to college, campus resources, etc.
• Foster connections between students by facilitating energetic icebreakers.
• Lead informative and enthusiastic tour of UNT Dallas’ growing campus.
• Provide courtesy calls to students to remind them about their New Student Orientation session.
• Assist in the preparation of materials (name tags, t-shirts, bags, etc.) and set up for each orientation session.
• Assist with the orientation check-in and check-out process.
• Assist orientation staff and other professional staff with event logistics and production tasks during each orientation session to ensure its success.
• Answer student questions in-person, on the phone, and via email while providing excellent customer service.
• Perform other assignments as needed.
