Position Overview

The Senior Director of Development, Planned Giving, works in consultation with the Executive Director to develop funding opportunities and implement a comprehensive program to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospects and donors for planned and major gifts in support of university initiatives. The Sr. Director works in a collegial and supportive manner with colleagues and donors to maximize giving to the university and coordinates with corporate and foundation relations and academic units.

The Senior Director collaborates with UNT's advancement services, donor relations and marketing/communications teams to implement effective recognition and messaging. This position is expected to manage a portfolio of planned giving donors and solicit a full range of planned gifts including, but not limited to: insurance gifts, bequests, remainder trusts, gift annuities, real estate, donor advised funds, outright gifts, and appreciated stock.

The position reports to the Executive Director of Development for Planned Giving and works closely with Deans, Faculty and University volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and seven years' of professional experience in fundraising, donor relations, public relations, or sales; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of philanthropy and fundraising principles.
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with internal and external constituents.
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop and execute strategies.
  • Ability to attend numerous off site events and meetings and travel and work evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cordial, productive, and professional working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Exceptional communications skills.
  • Ability to master University policies and procedures and apply these in specific situations.
  • Ability to exercise resourcefulness and good judgment.
  • Ability to manage multiple streams of work.
  • Demonstrated excellent analytical skills, problem solving ability and strong critical thinking skills.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Five to seven years of paid fundraising, development, and relationship building experience including qualification, cultivation and gift solicitation experience.
  • Experience with complex gifts, particularly in a university setting or complex non-profit environment.
  • Financial planning, law firm or relatable experience preferred. Paralegal experience accepted.
  • The ability to discuss confidential matters with donors regarding issues like mortality, finances, and legacy.
  • Comfortable collaborating with financial advisors and/or attorneys, trust administrators, and bankers to execute gifts and realize matured estate dollars.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to close a gift.
  • Demonstrated relationship-management experience, particularly within the context of a campaign.
  • The ability to communicate sometimes complex issues in simple terms.
  • Blackbaud Raiser's Edge experience or other relationship management system.
  • Background in legal or tax field highly desirable.
  • Awareness of trends in philanthropy, specifically in Planned Giving to leverage the maximum giving potential of each prospect and donor.

Preferred Certification:

  • Advanced degree (JD, MBA, or MPA) or equivalent
  • Certification (CFP, CPA) or equivalent

Job Duties:

Portfolio Management & Production:

  • Plan, manage and serve as a solicitor for Planned Giving solicitations.
  • Develop and present proposals to secure planned and major gifts from individuals.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the university to fulfill donor goals and objectives and to implement appropriate stewardship and recognition.
  • Develop and work a portfolio of donors and prospects to increase the major gift pipeline.
  • Qualify new donors, make discovery calls and generate leads through personal visits, emails, direct mail and telephone contact.
  • Achieve an annual fundraising goal of $1million + from a personalized portfolio of prospects and in collaboration with advancement colleagues.
  • Insure Planned Giving data is entered correctly and on a timely basis.

Administrative Functions:

  • Ensure timely completion of gift plans and endowment agreements, and any other related documentation.
  • Assist to manage the process for settling estates from matured bequests.
  • Create gift illustrations in PG Calc software for life income gifts and calculations of net present value.
  • Support, consult and serve as an advisor and primary point of contact for UNT Planned Giving for prospects, donors, volunteers and university colleagues.

Additional Duties:

  • Participate in and support any special project fundraising for university priorities as assigned by the Executive Director of Development for Planned Giving.
  • Enhance the marketing strategies that promote Planned Giving to alumni and actively promote the 1890 Legacy Society to raise donor awareness of the benefits of Planned Giving.
