Department Summary
The Research Integrity and Compliance (RIC) unit within the Division of Research & Innovation is committed to serving, educating, and supporting the UNT research community by ensuring that the Institution and investigators conduct research in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as university policies and procedures. The RIC unit provides guidance and assistance to researchers in the following areas: Human Subjects and Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Conflict of interest (COI), Export controls, and Responsible conduct of research (RCR).
Position Overview
The Sr. Director Research Compliance position serves in the senior leadership role for the Research Integrity & Compliance unit within the Division of Research & Innovation. The Sr Director oversees the Research Compliance Programs, including: IRB, IBC, IACUC, and Vivarium Animal Lab. This position serves as the campus and research administration liaison as team lead for the Research Integrity & Compliance unit to ensure the university’s compliance with applicable research regulations; and interpreting and clarifying policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure consistent decision making. The position develops, implements, manages, and sustains efficient operating procedures to facilitate the processing of human subject, animal, and biological safety research protocols in accordance with university policy, government regulations, and sponsor requirements. Communication skills are essential as the position leads efforts to educate the research community on human subject, animal and biological research compliance and ethics. Supervisory skills are essential, as the position manages and coach staff, evaluates performance and determines staffing needs. Leadership is demonstrated through guidance for staff, faculty and student researchers, and other university departments related to complex research protocols.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and seven years of relevant professional experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to function independently, in a team environment and lead for the research compliance programs associated with human subjects, animal and biological safety research. Knowledge of regulations and ethical principles related to the ethical conduct of human subjects, animal, and life science research. Ability to maintain and organize accurate and detailed records and work within software platforms. Excellent analytical, organizational, reasoning, communications, and problem-solving skills. Ability to quickly analyze large amounts of facts and data to generate alternatives and timely solutions for a variety of complex fact patterns. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to be highly detail oriented, meet strict deadlines, and remain calm during challenging situations.
Preferred Qualifications
3 to 5 years experience working in higher education.
Job Duties
- Serves in senior leadership management role for Research Compliance Programs (IRB, IACUC, IBC) within Research Integrity & Compliance unit, including directly supervising: Director Research Compliance Programs, Vivarium Animal Lab Manager, Biosafety Officer, and Sr. Administrative Coordinator.
- Provides administrative oversight and support for Research Compliance Committees (IRB, IACUC, IBC) and oversight of staff and operations that support human subjects, animal and life science research, and vivarium core facility to ensure compliance with government and funding agency regulatory guidelines and university policy. This work includes the development of operations required for the vivarium within the new science and technology building.
- Provides the UNT research community with workshops, training opportunities, and materials to support their research compliance efforts.
- Collaborates with stakeholders within the division and across campus to develop new or revised research compliance procedures and policies to maintain compliance with emerging federal, state, and university research compliance issues and trends.
- Provides support to the Associate Vice President for Research Innovation involving compliance issues, and oversight and management of the growing university core research facilities (e.g. Vivarium, Genomics Center etc).
- Other duties as assigned by Vice President for Research and Innovation.
