Facilities Fire Systems provides service, inspection, & maintenance of all fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, kitchen hood suppression systems, fire extinguishers, & special hazards systems for UNT Denton & Frisco campuses. Our mission is to ensure the safety of our students, staff, faculty, & buildings by keeping our fire safety equipment well-maintained, performing our work competently & efficiently, as well as communicating with those involved throughout the work being completed. Position Overview
The Facilities Department at the University of North Texas is seeking to hire a Senior Skilled Craft Technician - Fire to join our team.
Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
* Perform monthly and annual inspections of all Fire Extinguishers across campus.
* Perform extinguisher change-outs as required by extinguisher age.
* Add extinguishers when requested or needed.
* Service and maintain fire alarm systems across campus.
* Assist contractors performing inspections and repairs to building fire systems across campus.
* Assist other technicians within the department when requested.
* Must be able to lift 40 pounds continuously.
* Also must be able to walk up stairs when performing tasks.
* Other duties as assigned
** This position is considered to be essential personnel, and may require working overtime, which could include nights and weekends as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Five years' of experience in maintenance/repair or related field; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Employees in this job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure and they must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Knowledge of and skill in use of standard tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices of general maintenance task; knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of general maintenance; knowledge of blueprints, schematics, and working drawings.
* Ability to use basic shop math applications. Ability to locate and identify problems in appropriate building system or equipment and to plan and execute necessary repairs.
* Physical ability to perform moderately heavy physical work which includes lifting and crawling, and to remain outdoors in inclement weather.
* Knowledge of appropriate safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
* 1-3 years working with fire alarm systems, preferably Notifier Fire Alarm Systems
* Working knowledge of NFPA 10
* Working knowledge of NFPA 72
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Possession of a valid Texas driver's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment; ability to drive a vehicle and maintain coverage under University liability insurance policy, if required to drive University vehicles.
Job Duties:
- Performs repairs on campus fire systems equipment including, but not limited to; fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, fire pumps, and control relays.
- Performs preventive maintenance and testing on campus fire systems equipment including, but not limited to; fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, fire pumps, and control relays.
- Monitor campus fire system equipment for correct operation. Includes looking for and correcting equipment failures, incorrect sensor readings, failed actuators, and network communication problems. Make corrections within fire systems where possible. Alert responsible groups of equipment issues not within fire systems.
- Maintains tools in good working order. Makes tool and material requests to supervisor, or senior team member. Maintains cleanliness of shop, mechanical spaces on campus, and university vehicles. Picks up trash on campus when it is encountered.
- Communicates with the requestors of work orders assigned. Attends position specific training as available. Performs all other duties assigned by Facilities Maintenance supervisor, manager, or director.

Physical Requirements:
- Communicating with others to exchange information.

- Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.

- Lifting and Moving objects up to 50 pounds.
- Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
- Operating machinery and/or power tools.
- Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
Environmental Hazards:
- No adverse environmental conditions expected.
- Exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
- Low temperatures.
- Outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
- Work with toxic or caustic chemicals.
- Elevated temperatures.
- Exposure to moving mechanical parts or vibration.
