Position Overview

As part of a grant through the National Science Foundation Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program, UNT Dallas has established a STEM Center to focus on and increase the personal and professional resources available to our undergraduate STEM majors and to house the BAT-LSAMP Scholars program. The STEM Center is seeking part-time peer tutors to support course specific peer tutoring programs and individual students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a currently enrolled University of North Texas at Dallas, student making satisfactory progress toward completion of a bachelor’s degree program. Recent graduates may also apply.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate intermediate to advanced level of knowledge in tutoring subject.
  • Must be recommended by a faculty member from the discipline in which the student is applying to tutor – Recommendation needs to be emailed to NSF_LSAMP@untdallas.edu

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills
  • Empathy and the ability to relate to the diverse student body population at UNT Dallas
  • Ability to engage with students, program staff, and faculty effectively
  • Develop tutoring materials, implement lesson plans, and report of students tutored

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous tutoring experience with small groups, and individual students
  • Knowledge of (or ability to rapidly assimilate and retain) University academic policy, procedure, and practices
  • Knowledge of FERPA preferred but not required

Job Duties:

The STEM Center Peer Tutor(s) will be responsible for the following:

  • Tutoring UNTD STEM undergraduate students
  • Preparing peer tutoring session materials
  • Scheduling tutoring appointments/Tracking attendance
  • Maintaining records of students tutored
  • Attending and completing mandatory trainings
  • Creating resources for students such as handouts, videos, podcasts, etc.
  • Following appropriate safety procedures and security measures related to work performed Supporting STEM Center Events. 

STEM Center Peer Tutor(s) will support specific content domains, these are:

  • Biological and Life Science courses, such as:
    • BIOL 1710 – Biology for Science Majors I
    • BIOL 1720 – Biology for Science Majors II
    • BIOL 3451 – Genetics
    • BIOL 3510 – Cell Biology
    • BIOL 4260 – Principles of Evolution
    • BIOL 4310 – Animal Physiology
  • Computer Science & Information Technology courses, such as:
    • CSCE 1030 – Computer Science I
    • CSCE 1040 – Computer Science II
    • CSCE 2100 – Computing Foundations I
    • CSCE 2110 – Computing Foundations II
    • CSCE 2300 – Digital Logic
  • Physical Sciences courses, such as:
    • CHEM 1410 – General Chemistry for Science Majors
    • CHEM 1420 – General Chemistry for Science Majors
    • CHEM 3370 – Organic Chemistry I
    • CHEM 3380 – Organic Chemistry II
    • PHYS 1410 – General Physics I
    • PHYS 1420 – General Physics II 
  • Mathematics courses, such as:
    • MATH 1314 – Algebra for STEM Majors
    • MATH 1316 – Trigonometry
    • MATH 1342 – Elementary Probability and Statistics
    • MATH 2413 – Calculus I
    • MATH 2414 – Calculus II
