Department Summary
The Foundations program in the College of Visual Arts and Design provides a broad foundation for developing the practical skills and conceptual methodologies necessary to enter any visual arts major within the college. The program promotes the understanding of historical and contemporary currents and their relationships.
The Foundations program aims to equip and nurture a community of first-year students with intercultural curiosity and transformable and transferable skills and knowledge. Students will be taught to embrace failure, succeed in subsequent studies, and become creative and resilient global citizens, artists, scholars, educators, practitioners, and leaders in their chosen fields.
Position Overview
Responsible for providing technical support, equipment maintenance, and safety oversight of academic shop/classroom studio operations. Assists and instructs students and faculty on the proper use of equipment and effective shop/studio practices. Provides direct and indirect curriculum, classroom, and programmatic support for instruction in the CVAD Foundations Programs instructor and students. This position will work closely with the Foundations Director on programmatic support on an ongoing basis.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate's Degree and two years' of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Skill in utilization and maintenance of equipment or machinery related to area of assignment. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to plan and prioritize work for self and others. Ability to work collaboratively and build relations with colleagues, coworkers, constituents.Knowledge of safety and security practices related to area of assignment.
Preferred Qualifications
MFA in Studio Art, Design, or related fields. Prior experience in curriculum or classroom support.
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Job Duties:
- Classroom Studio Support (direct):Maintains all CVAD Foundations classroom equipment and facilitates checkout of various hand tools to students for CVAD Foundation Courses.
- Classroom Studio Support (direct):Maintains health and safety standards (per the university and college guidelines) for classroom practices related to safe materials and equipment use, safe movement in severe weather, fire, or other emergencies, and annual First Aid, CPR, and AED use training as applicable.
- Academic/Curricular Support (direct):Assists in organizing the annual student exhibition Emergence, i.e., working with the program director and graduate student assistants to publish a call for entry, collect, collate, jury, install/deinstall the exhibition; solicits and organizes a regular display of student work in the hallway each semester.
- Academic/Curricular Support (direct):Works with the director with input from faculty on the Canvas Portal in creating and administrating policies and procedures consistent with the programs goal and responsive to the needs of programs, faculty, and students; keeps documents organized and accessible per program and college guidelines.
- Classroom Studio Support (direct):Provides classroom and curricular support to the faculty, Graduate Teaching Assistants, Adjunct Assistants, and Adjuncts in the CVAD Foundation area; works with hourly workers and graduate student assistants. -
- Academic/Curricular Support (direct):Creates a workflow for the record retention materials; collects the record retention materials each semester from the lab instructors; provides support and participates in the semesterly Program Orientation for the instructors in the program and organizes and maintains a digital archive of student outcomes from each semester.
- Administrative/Management Support (indirect):Keeps the inventory, assigns, and manages lockers and revenue; collects and posts office hours for the lab instructors each semester.
- Administrative/Management Support (indirect):Collects faculty input and works with the director to plan and execute instructional budget for materials, supplies, mentorship of student workers, and graduate student assistants, and maintains communication in the CVAD Foundation classroom studios.
- Administrative/Management Support (indirect):Maintains an inventory of classroom supplies and creates a workflow for restocking/replenishing supplies and materials; makes purchases for all necessary materials/supplies, manages PCARD usages, and updates SAP Concur as needed.
- Other Support (direct and indirect):Ad hoc duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements:

Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like.
Lifting and Moving objects up to 20 pounds.
Lifting and Moving objects up to 50 pounds.
Lifting and moving objects up to 100 pounds or more.
Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
Operating machinery and/or power tools.
Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers. Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
