Department Summary

The Office of Advising Services promotes high-quality advising across UNT’s advising units through coordination, training/ professional development, and leadership support. Our advising team offers pathways counseling to prospective and current students, TSI advising, and academic preparedness resources. The office is located in the Academic Success Center at Sage Hall.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for providing information and guidance to current and prospective students on Texas Success Initiative (TSI) statute and requirements. This position also advises TSI-incomplete students into their course remediation and assists in implementing programs related to student success and retention.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong presentation skills. Strong problem solving skills. Ability to use a variety of complex computer applications. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to work independently and lead project teams effectively. Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in an advising office, and/or working with at risk populations.
Knowledgeable on Texas Success Initiative
Demonstrated strong organizational skills and attention to details
Demonstrated strong communication skills, verbal and written

Required License/Registration/Certifications

 

Job Duties

  • Understands and stays informed on changes to TSI polices and procedures 
  • Advises students on TSI processes, assessment, and requirements. This includes transcript evaluation of incoming students, advising of incoming and ongoing students, creation of education plans, and communication plan. 
  • Maintains up to date documentation and progress of students TSI incomplete 
  • Coordinates orientation efforts for TSI incomplete students 
  • Ensures TSI information is properly entered and tracked. Setts students up for registration and tracks grades. 
  • Promotes good will within the office. Works in a professional cooperative manner with external stakeholders; develops working relationships with advisors across campus. Positively represents the Office of Advising Services at various events on and off campus. This includes, but is not limited to, conferences, committees, campus events, and orientation. 

Physical Requirements

Communicating with others to exchange information.
Lifting and Moving objects up to 20 pounds.
Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.

8:00am - 5:00pm, Occasional evening or Saturday events
