Department Summary

Student Accounting is deeply committed to delivering the highest quality of innovative student account and financial services to the UNT community, helping ensure UNT’s enrollment and financial success. Our team is responsible for assessing and collecting all tuition and fees, processing waivers, exemptions, veterans' educational benefits, third-party sponsorships, tuition benefit programs, refunds, departmental deposit and financial services, and tax reporting.

Position Overview

Provide excellent customer service to students and coworkers. This position is responsible for ensuring the safety and reconciliation of cash collected for the university. The area is responsible for collecting tuition and fee payments in person and by mail, managing online payments, and administering tuition fee payment plans. This position supervises the Payment Processing Area.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree plus 4 years' of progressively responsible experience in a student accounting, billing/receivables, reporting, or related business field or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Subject matter expert level knowledge of managing a significant student accounts receivable operation, including areas such as tuition/fee billing, payment processing, sponsored billing, waivers/exemptions, veterans educational benefits, and ID cards.
  • Deeply familiar with enrollment data/trends and ability to design services, processes and tools which support department, division and university operations which ultimately foster enhanced student success.
  • High degree of accountability and a drive to ensure student success.
  • Detail oriented and function well as a working manager.
  • Ability to maintain a complex workload with competing deadlines, lead a diverse team through largescale projects and ability to communicate effectively with students, campus partners and team members.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships across team, department and division boundaries to ensure that projects and initiatives are successful.
  • Combination of strong financial, analytical, communication, and process analysis skills. Proficient with complex reporting methodologies.
  • Strong project and team management skills.

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

  • Ability to effectively demonstrate initiative and productivity in the work environment.
  • A preferred candidate will have prior experience in a student accounts/bursars office or experience working with large scale financial transactions in a higher education setting or closely related service-provider environment/industry.

In addition, a preferred candidate will have experience developing complex reports/dashboards to support institutional decision making.

Job Duties:

  • Must maintain a working knowledge of the EIS system, navigate the system, comprehend and explain student accounts, troubleshoot issues and understand processes which affect the student account. Must document appropriate comments in EIS when necessary.
  • Completes assignments accurately and in a timely manner with minimal follow-up required. Demonstrates initiative by taking action to provide customer service within scope of position and actively seeks additional assignments from supervisor.
  • Actively supports initiatives to engage all employees in the workplace. Provides timely communication to team members. Takes actions to demonstrate care for team members and to communicate their value as part of the team. Recognizes and promotes accomplishments of team members.
  • Supervises collection of tuition and fee payments by students and parents. Ensures all cash controls are followed by employees and cash drawers balance daily.
  • Daily management of eCommerce processing for online payments. Ensures any processing errors are identified and processed immediately.
  • Supervises the collection, processing, safekeeping and deposit of funds collected by UNT departments.
  • Manage student credit card chargeback/dispute cases.
  • Must maintain a working knowledge of the student tuition fee payment plans, configuration requirements, testing scenarios, and be able to troubleshoot issues and understand processes which affect the student account.
  • Work with the UNT Controller team to identify, research, and reconcile monthly accounting variances and discrepancies.
  • Prepare and present weekly/monthly reports on payment revenue activity, payment plan activity revenue, and reconciliation reports between EIS student system, online payment processor, and the bank.
  • Responsible for delivering exceptional customer service to all internal and external customers. Maintains positive interactions with others. Provides professional, clear and accurate verbal and written communication. Resolves customers issues, offers alternatives or submits them to the appropriate personnel following the chain of command. Alerts supervisor(s) of escalating issues.
  • Promotes a positive work environment for all team members. Demonstrates respect, flexibility, open-mindedness, and kindness in all interactions with students, team members, and campus partners. Demonstrates a commitment to the mission and vision of Student Accounting, the Division of Enrollment, and the University of North Texas. Serves as an example of positive engagement in the department through active participation in meetings, within committees, and by assisting others.

Monday-Friday; 8 AM - 5 PM, with additional time as needed.
