Department Summary

The Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science {TAMS) is a unique residential program for high school­aged Texas students who are high achievers and interested in mathematics and science. While living on campus in McConnell Hall, students in this two-year program complete a rigorous academic curriculum of college coursework at the University of North Texas (UNT). Instruction is by university faculty. There are no high school courses taught, but students enjoy many of the activities of high school and the company of age mates who are intellectual peers.

The Honors College is dedicated to enriching the undergraduate academic experience for the more than 2,000 talented, motivated, and well-prepared students who choose to be members. The goal of the Honors College is to help these students build an excellent foundation that prepares them for studying at the graduate level and establishing a fulfilling career.

Position Overview

To serve as the chief deputy of the Director of Student Life. Specific responsibilities include supervision and evaluation of McConnell Hall residence life staff; supervision of the academy discipline system; and supervision of all aspects of student programming.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and at least 4 years relevant experience in student programming or services, student affairs, or other professionally related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Job Duties:

  • Maintains a service mentality in all professional contacts; demonstrates upbeat, courteous, and cooperative attitude, managing parent and student grievances appropriately.
  • Demonstrates ability to fill in for the Director of Student Life when unavailable; is prompt to meetings and appointments, supportive to other Academy departments, and represents Student Life in the best interest of TAMS.
  • Supervision: Establish working schedule for the Program Advisors; evaluates job performances providing ongoing feedback to staff not directly supervising and conducts formal evaluations for Program Advisors.
  • Meetings: Conduct Programming Advisor Staff meeting weekly, meet One to One with each of the 4 Program Advisors biweekly, conducts disciplinary hearings with students and staff as needed. Attends and participates in weekly Staff Meeting and Student Life Leadership Meeting.
  • Training: Plan and implement 3 Residence Life Training programs (August, January, and May). In depth emergency response training for Program Advisors and Hall Directors with a Hall Director On Call manual. Assess ongoing training needs and implement for staff (RAs, PAs, HDs, Desk).
  • Discipline: Conduct disciplinary hearings for high level policy violations, conduct disciplinary appeals for hall director decisions; clearly record disciplinary meetings and appeals, communicate in writing all decisions to the Director of Student Life.
  • Handbook: Work with the Director of Student Life to update the TAMS Student Handbook yearly; keep a running notebook on suggestions and improvements throughout the year on the TAMS Student Handbook and work cooperatively to edit this document.
  • Programming: Work with Program Advisors and student leaders to set goals for student groups. Organize a spring or summer Exec Training meeting and early fall planning sessions with staff and student groups. Attend Staff House Programs and at least 2 major student sponsored programs. Oversee the Reservation Calendar and system for programming space.
  • Community Service: Monitor student community service records. Approve of verifications of service and submit an end of year report to the Director of Student Life. Find ways to encourage students towards participation in community service activities.
  • Vehicles: Overseeing regular maintenance of the TAMS vehicles (8 in total), administering system of driver requests from students, procuring drivers from the staff, and developing a good working relationship with UNT Automotive staff.
  • Advising: Work with the Program Advisors and assist them with their advising duties; utilize the weekly staff meeting to give advising pointers, continually coach the Program Advisors and House Leaders on advising. Personally act as Program Advisor of at least one student club.
  • Special Events Planning: Planning or Advising staff on major Student Life events (Summer & Fall Orientation, Rose cutting, Senior Day, Prom, etc.), as well as participation in other departmental events such as TAMS Graduation.
  • Assessing student needs and building community: (1.) Be current and up to date with the student body; know at least 75% of the student body by sight and solicit and respond to students concerns.
  • Budget Monitoring: Maintain the budget for student activities; map out a spending budget for each of the student groups at the beginning of each semester. Keep an accurate budget record and meet with the administrative assistant on a monthly basis to discuss the budget numbers. Make the budget records available for advisors and students. Make recommendations for capital expenditures.
  • Emergency Response Duties: Act in accordance with established emergency protocol; when notified, respond to all emergency situations within a reasonable time frame. Oversee safety and security measures. Maintain accessibility (phone calls) for high-level emergencies during Hall Director On Call shifts.
