Department Summary

We are a multifaceted, interdisciplinary team of healthcare providers and researchers. We are committed to providing excellence in clinical care, education, and research. Our goals and objectives amplify the distinctive nature of osteopathic physicians and their roles in delivering the highest quality health care to the citizens of Texas.

Education
Through innovative curricular designs, early clinical experiences, and mentorship, the department is focused on producing highly competent, caring, and compassionate Family Medicine physicians, helping reduce the shortage of primary care physicians in our Texas communities. Our multidisciplinary faculty manage the curriculum for Year 1 and 2 and specialty core rotations for Year 3.

Clinical
We aim to provide a medical home and comprehensive quality care for the entire family at our clinical sites. We provide specialty care to systemic diseases in our specialty clinics, with a focus on general and thoracic surgical disease.

Research
Our collaborative and translational research program is involved in interdepartmental, interscholastic and interdisciplinary projects. Our focus is on medical education and translational research.

Service
We stress the importance to giving back to the communities in Texas as well as nationally. The faculty hold positions in national organizations of medical education, graduate medical education and clinical specialties.

Position Overview

The Program Director has responsibility, authority, and accountability for their program: administration and operations; teaching and scholarly activity; trainee recruitment, selection, evaluation, and promotion; disciplinary action; supervision of trainees; trainee education in the context of patient care; application to and compliance with all applicable ACGME program requirements.

The Program Director position is a 0.5 FTE role. Candidates must also maintain a clinical position of at least 0.5 FTE.

Clinical work is flexible and can be performed in any area of Psychiatry. However, candidates must dedicate at least 0.3 FTE to clinical work that involves direct engagement with residents.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree and active practice in Behavioral Health
  • Buprenorphine treatment experience
  • ECT experience and certification
  • Extensive medical education experience
  • Board certification in Psychiatry by ABPN

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree and active practice in Behavioral Health
  • Physician dedicated to maintaining at least .5 FTE clinical role, with at least a 0.3 clinical FTE role working with residents
  • Specialty expertise and at least 3 years of documented educational and/or administrative experience, or qualifications acceptable to the ACGME Review Committee.
  • Current certification in the program specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties or by the American Osteopathic Board of Medical Specialties.
  • Current medical licensure and appropriate medical staff appointment.
  • Ongoing clinical activity.
  • Academically and attitudinally suited to conduct the training program.
  • Meets appropriate annual CME requirements to maintain certification.

Job Duties:

Core Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive psychiatric medical care (assessment, consultation, treatment) to patients in various areas of VANTHCS MHS.
  • Incumbent must be skilled in general outpatient and inpatient psychiatry, including diagnostic evaluations, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy.
  • He/she should be competent in the management of individuals with a broad range of clinical problems, including but not limited to post-traumatic stress disorder, mood, anxiety and psychotic disorders, substance use disorders and psychiatric disorders in the elderly Veteran population.
  • Additional responsibilities include delivering interventional psychiatric treatments including ECT, Esketamine, Ketamine, and rTMS.
  • The incumbent will provide extensive clinical instruction and supervision of psychiatry residents and function as the Psychiatry Residency Program Director in partnership with TCOM.
  • The incumbent will serve as a collaborative member of a multidisciplinary mental health team.
  • He/she may provide clinical supervision for health care professionals such as Residents, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Clinical Pharmacy Specialists.

Lead Program Accreditation Processes:

  • Initial applications, ACGME site visits, and ongoing compliance with ACGME and institutional requirements.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate a competency-based curriculum aligned with institutional missions and community needs.
  • Oversee clinical site operations, appoint site directors, and ensure appropriate faculty supervision based on trainee level and patient care complexity.
  • Maintain a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning environment, promoting diversity, professionalism, and psychological safety.
  • Recruit, retain, and support a diverse workforce of trainees, faculty, and staff through equitable policies and inclusive practices.
  • Conduct regular evaluations of trainee performance, facilitate individualized learning plans, and organize Annual Program Evaluations with improvement strategies.
  • Manage program documentation and data submission through ACGME ADS, and coordinate internal and external reviews by the DIO, GMEC, and ACGME.
  • Engage in faculty development, scholarly activities, and research to foster educational excellence and a culture of inquiry.
