Department Summary

UNT’s Department of Communication Studies is a collegial and growing scholarly community with strong traditions in three areas: interpersonal, digital, and organizational communication, rhetorical studies, and performance studies. The department maintains an undergraduate major with an enrollment around 400 students and a master’s degree program of 20-25 students, and attracts students from the college’s interdisciplinary studies program. The department is committed to broader university initiatives aimed at supporting students as well as rigorous research culture.

Position Overview

The Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Texas (UNT) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in performance studies to start in Fall 2025. We seek a scholar-artist whose research explores the intersections between digital performance and storytelling, who is prepared to supervise master’s students, conduct graduate courses, and teach at the undergraduate level. A PhD in communication studies or terminal degree in a closely related field is required at the time of appointment.

Tenure-track Faculty in the Department of Communication Studies teach two courses per semester. Our new colleague will offer undergraduate and graduate courses within the performance studies area of the department and supervise master’s students. We are particularly interested in applicants who will make creative and extensive use of the department’s Black Box Theatre. Strong candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to mentoring a wide variety of students.

Minimum Qualifications

A PhD in communication studies or terminal degree in a closely related field is required at the time of appointment.

Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate instruction in the area of Performance Studies.

Demonstrated capacity to design and instruct undergraduate (introductory and upper-level) and graduate courses in Performance Studies.

Demonstrated capacity to mentor graduate students in Performance Studies.

Demonstrated creative/ research excellence in Performance Studies at the intersection of performance and digital/ media expertise.

Additional Details

-A short list of candidates will be required to submit three letters of reference, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and sample syllabi.

-The first round of interviews will take place via Zoom. Subsequently, finalists will be invited to campus and asked to perform a teaching demonstration and a research talk, in addition to interview sessions with various audiences including the search committee, students, faculty colleagues, and representatives from the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences (CLASS) Executive Dean’s office.
