HSC Institutional Advancement seeks to advance HSC’s mission to create solutions for a healthier community. Position Overview

Reporting to the Vice President, Institutional Advancement, the Associate Vice President of Advancement Operations “AVP” is a leadership role in Institutional Advancement at The University of North Texas Health Science Center. We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented, creative leader with a proven track record developing, nurturing, facilitating, and reinforcing best practices in Advancement operations and donor relations. The AVP provides supervision and direction to team members furthering the mission of UNTHSC through the goals of Institutional Advancement. The AVP creates strategies for and provides daily oversight for multiple areas to support to the Division of Institutional Advancement including donor relations, special events, prospect/moves management, research, communications, financial services/budgeting, and scholarships, and works closely with all levels of staff, including senior management. The AVP supports the Vice President of Institutional Advancement with all operational matters as assigned.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience with project planning and management, reporting, donor relations, stewardship, and financial management and must be comfortable collaborating with multiple stakeholders and executive leadership.

Key stakeholders and partners internally include, but are not limited to, senior leaders of the colleges, institutes, sponsored research, clinical operations, marketing and communications and enrollment management. External stakeholders include a network of vendors and peers at UNT System component institutions and other institutions of higher education.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience.
  • Ten years minimum experience with analytics, advancement operations, financial management and college/university foundations.
  • Eight to ten years managing and/or using Raisers' Edge NXT or similar Advancement system is required.
  • Experience in supervising or collaborating with both technical and non-technical peers.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge and experience working with Advancement systems and operations.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with leadership and executives at all levels in the organization.
  • Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills are essential.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with both technical and non-technical staff.
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues.
  • Highest level of customer service skills and expertise.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and to evaluate multiple perspectives of problems and subsequent decisions.
  • Must be able to work diplomatically with vendor and College partners.
  • Ability to analyze financial transactions and their relationship to Institutional Advancement information.
  • Ability to quickly learn, interpret and apply a variety of complex policies and procedures.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
  • Proven skills in continuous process improvement.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekends as needed.
  • Knowledge Demonstrated knowledge of Advancement Operations best practices in gift processing, donor relations, stewardship, scholarship awards management, special events and annual giving.

Job Duties:

  • Creates strategies for and provides daily oversight for multiple areas which provide development support to the Division of Institutional Advancement including donor relations, special events, prospect development, research, communication, data management and annual giving. 
  • Coordinates (and attends) donor events and meetings with the Vice President, President and major donors to further engagement and fundraising goals.
  • Directs a team of managers, professionals and paraprofessionals including hiring, training, evaluation, performance management, and managing daily activities.
  • Responsible for administering all gift reporting and donor stewardship.
  • Oversees and ensures the accuracy and institution/foundation compliance with all gifts-in-kind, major gifts, planned gifts, and other gifts of complex assets, as needed. Develops and manages IA and UNTHSC Foundation budgets. 
  • Creates and updates UNT Policies related to Institutional Advancement to align with Board of Regents Rules.
  • Serves as the advancement liaison to the Office of General Counsel for legal matters related to donor gifts, gift acceptance, contracts and gift agreements.
