Position Overview

The Chief Radio/TV Engineer (TV Engineer) is responsible for the day-to-day technical operation of the television studios and master control room. The position is also responsible for the technical operation of ntTV which is the departments television station, and DCTVs operation. In general, the position involves a 50%-time allocation to studio plant technical operations and a 50%-time allocation to IT systems support.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field and 3 years' of audio, video, or media production experience; experience with specific systems, equipment and software as specified by department; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of broadcasting equipment repair.
• Knowledge of the theories and principles of electronics.
• Strong computer and LAN/WAN skills, including installation and configuration of Microsoft Windows Servers.
• Knowledge of FCC broadcast regulations.
• Strong troubleshooting experience, repair, RF and transmitter site maintenance skills.
• Knowledge of technical developments and techniques in the field of media distribution.
• Knowledge of audio studio installation and maintenance procedures.
• Ability to be available at any time to perform necessary maintenance to resolve broadcast failures.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree and experience working in a university television studio environment. OR: Five years full-time, paid television engineering experience in a broadcast station or studio production environment.
• Experience in the operation and engineering of systems and equipment supporting live program origination in a remote/field and studio environment.
• Capability to think at the system level with the ability to solve complex problems by identifying and analyzing sub system components.
• Broadcast engineering experience working with the following: HDTV(1080i) television cameras, switchers, graphics generators. HDTVSDI (SMPTE292) signal distribution equipment, cabling, and routers with embedded and non-embedded audio. Broadcast signal standards converters; HDTV encoders, decoders, and frame synchronizers, including camera and/or signal compression codecs.
• Thorough understanding of streaming technologies and codecs including H.264 and H.265 technologies. Audio signals in the analog and digital domain, particularly Audio over IP (AoIP). Audio mixing consoles, microphones, cabling, decoders, encoders, monitors.
• Familiarity with television studio robotic and automation systems including control room automation systems, IT ethernet data networks, routers, and managed/unmanaged switches. Integration of broadcast equipment into new or existing IT infrastructure.
• Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016/2019 workstation and server administration, repair, maintenance. Cable television distribution and RF systems. Satellite downlink RF equipment and systems. TV studio lighting elements, AC electrical distribution, and controllers, including LED lighting and system controls. Oscilloscopes, RF signal analyzers, data analyzers, voltmeters, waveform monitors and vector scopes.
• Equipment repair, maintenance, and installation using hand tools and skills commonly found in a television studio engineering shop.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Certified Technology Specialist and/or Society of Broadcast Engineering (SBE) certification (CBT, CBTE, CSTE, CBNT, CBNE) and/or FCC General Class Radiotelephone Operator License is desirable.

Job Duties:

• Provide TV engineering support to MRTS/MSOJ television studios and ntTV/DCTV television facilities.
• Provide IT support for computers, broadcast equipment and systems used in MRTS/MSOJ/ntTV television facilities.
• Supervise student workers and other studio/technical staff.
• Maintain equipment inventories.
• Inform students and faculty of studio operating policies and enforce same. 
• Oversee facility scheduling in support of classes, television productions, and special projects.
• Upgrade, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair facilities and equipment, including the field production truck equipment.
• Recommend, procure, and install new equipment.
• Provide long-term planning concerning expansion and upgrade of facilities, including robotics and automation. 
• Maintain documentation of facility design.
• Coordinate with local television cable carriers concerning transmission of the ntTV broadcast signal, as well as DCTV.
• Train MRTS/MSOJ/ntTV/DCTV students and faculty in the operation of studio facilities and equipment.

Work Schedule:

8:00am to 5:00pm; Monday - Friday 40 hrs. per week. Some after-hours/weekend hours may be required for resolving broadcast failures.
