Department Summary

Counseling & Testing Services consists of two inter-related parts: The Counseling Center and Testing Services. We exist to serve the students and community of UNT in support of the mission of the University. Through our Counseling Center cervices, we strive to support the academic success and general well-being of UNT students through professional counseling, career counseling, consultation, mental-health screenings, educational programs and self-help resources as well as referral services. We offer to consult with Students, Parents, Faculty and Staff who may be concerned about a UNT student (while still respecting the confidentiality of our clients). With client permission, we often work closely with physicians and psychiatrists, the Career Center, Office of Disability Accommodations, and many other helpful resources in order to provide the best overall care. Our Testing Services provides a wide range of services including traditional admissions testing, computer-based testing, career testing, and many other tests.

Position Overview

In partnership with UNT Police, this position provides immediate crisis support to the UNT community when police are called to help address community members experiencing a mental health crisis. The purpose of this position is to reduce use of force, decrease repeat encounters, deescalate tense situations, and foster more positive, proactive engagement with the UNT community.

Minimum Qualifications

Currently licensed to practice in Texas as a Psychologist, Professional Counselor or Clinical Social Worker. If licensed to practice in another state, must be able to obtain license in Texas within 24 months of date of hire. Demonstrated experience in providing crisis intervention, risk assessment, care coordination, and case management.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Knowledge of professional counseling practices, policies, and procedures.
* Strong oral and written communications skills.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
* Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
• Extensive experience providing crisis assessment, intervention and follow up coordination of care.
• Experience using Titanium software and working in a college counseling or other acute care treatment setting.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Full, unrestricted TX license, as a: Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. If fully licensed in another state, must obtain licensure in the state of Texas within 6 months of employment.

Job Duties:

  • Respond to calls for service involving a person that may be in a mental health crisis, along with the assigned patrol officer.
  • Conduct mental health assessments to determine appropriate intervention or resources needed to address the crisis. This includes completing safety plans, as needed.
  • Provide consultation for crisis intervention, on-the-scene stabilization, and hospitalization requirements alongside officers.
  • Provide mental-health training and consultation for police officers and staff on mental health topics such as trauma-informed care, de-escalation techniques, etc.
  • Coordinate case management with external referrals, UNT Police, and Counseling and Testing Services and assist in identifying students who may benefit from services.
  • Conduct and assist with follow ups for mental health related calls.
  • Professional Development/Ethical/Legal Standards:
    a. Maintains CEU requirements and department CE file as required by state licensing board.
    b. Maintains active license or working towards completion within 24 months of date of hire.
    c. Remain informed of current legal and ethical issues related to mental health and law enforcement.
    d. Active in professional organizations (membership, presentations, publications).
    e. Aware of and maintains ethical standards of the profession.
    f. Seeks consultation when faced with ethical dilemmas.
    g. Appropriately document crisis intervention notes in Titanium (electronic health record system) by end of the day.
  • Professionalism:
    a. Promptness at all meetings and scheduled work hours.
    b. Keeps supervisor informed of absences, lateness, or schedule conflicts.
    c. Maintains Titanium Schedule to reflect work schedule accurately.
    d. Maintains positive work relationships.
    e. Responds to emails by the end of the next business day.
    f. Submits time sheets weekly.
    g. Reliable attendance.
    h. Maintains professionalism when responding to emails or feedback.
