The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Advising Office's mission is to teach, assist, and empower students to define, clarify and achieve academic and personal goals through professional, caring service.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for providing guidance to students by appraising their interests, aptitudes, and abilities to develop a career path and degree fit. Connects students with available resources for academic success and personal/professional development. This position is responsible for creating and implementing programs related to student success and retention.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree and two years' of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
  • Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory.
  • Strong presentation, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong counseling skills including career development and group facilitation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Remains active in professional development.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

  • Professional academic advising working with First Time in College (FTIC) students.

Job Duties:

Advising Policy:

  • Performs advanced advising work in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences regarding degree requirements, complex academic issues and targeted populations.
  • Interprets and makes decisions regarding academic policies.

Advising Communication with Students:

  • Corresponds with students concerning questions about degree requirements, transfer hours, etc. via various forms of communication when the student is not present.
  • Provides information and answers questions for prospective students and parents.

Advising Documentation:

  • Documents advising related work on Advising Records and in Navigate.

Degree Planning:

  • Prepares, updates and checks degree audits of self and others as needed, prioritizing VA, Athletes, Financial Aid and other exceptional degree audits.
  • Advanced evaluation of transfer work to determine degree audit applicability.

Orientations:

  • Conducts departmental orientation advising sessions, academic planning, and student success presentation as needed.

Programming, Intervention and Outreach:

  • Conducts programs, workshops, or group advising sessions for students as needed.
  • Initiates intrusive communication and follow up related to programming, outreach, or specific student issues.

Advising Related Responsibilities:

  • Reviews and updates both three and four year plans, catalog copy, encoding in uAchieve and major specific articulation guides for area community colleges.
  • Coordinates and participates i recruitment programs for targeted populations (Eagle Landings, Preview Day, etc.).

Leadership:

  • Serves as a referral resource for team members regarding complex major, career, and counseling situations.

Cooperation Professionalism:

  • Demonstrates an ability to be an effective team member of the office, and the UNT community, by assisting others when needed and performing all duties in a professional manner. 

Work Schedule:

Monday-Friday, 8:00AM - 5:00PM; some evenings, weekends and offsite.
