Department Summary
The Office of Strategic Infrastructure, Planning, and Construction (SIPC) at the University of North Texas System (UNTS), oversees all construction projects, planning and safety on all University campuses.
Position Overview
This position assists the Fire Marshal in the day-to-day operation of the Fire Marshal’s Office. The Deputy Fire Marshal represents the department in development and design meetings, assists in technical and specialized plan review, fire inspections, fire systems testing, code consulting and MEP inspections to ensure code and installation compliance with life safety and building codes and standards.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate's degree in Fire Science, Fire Protection, or related discipline and five (5) years of experience in reviewing/inspecting commercial buildings for life-safety compliance and systems; or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Basic Fire Inspector I II TCFP Certifications.
- Basic Fire Plan Examiner TCFP Certification.
- Knowledge of fire prevention measures Experience with code interpretations
- Experience in fire code enforcement practices
- Experience with NFPA Standards, ICC codes and applicable state laws
- Experience with fire department access of property/buildings, public safety, hazardous materials storage and incident response procedures.
- Competency with computer programs to organize, store, input and retrieve data.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Ability to apply safety and security practices appropriate to work performed
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Able to speak in public and maintain a professional presence.
- Available to work overtime as needed.
- Available for callout as needed.
- Ability to maintain an acceptable attendance history.

Preferred Qualifications
- Three (3) years’ experience performing fire inspections and plan review preferred.
- Applicants having an Intermediate TCFP Fire Inspector I & II certifications or higher are preferred.
- Applicants who have any State of Texas trade license or licenses (i.e. Plumbing, Electrical, HVAC, Fire Sprinkler, Fire Alarm) or National Certifications (NICET) in Fire Systems are preferred.
- Applicants who have International Code Conference (ICC) code certifications are preferred.
Required License/Registration/Certifications
- Basic Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Fire Inspector I & II Certifications and a Basic TCFP Fire Plan Examiner Certification are required.
- Applicants must have a clean driving record and possess, or obtain prior to beginning employment, a valid Texas Driver’s License, and be insurable to operate a state-owned vehicle.
Job Duties:
- Plan Review - Extensive knowledge and experience reviewing commercial building and specialized life safety plans, documents and other associated submittals for fire, building construction and life safety codes compliance. Extensive knowledge and experience applying the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) Standards, International Code Conference (ICC) codes and applicable state laws in the review of plans, documents and associated materials submittals.
- Inspections – Considerable experience inspecting and testing fire suppression, fire detection, fire alarm, fire control and specialty fire systems. Considerable experience inspecting building construction fire ratings and life safety systems. Extensive knowledge determining and evaluating fire department access, suppression water supplies, emergency communication system, emergency system and building egress systems. Experience with proper chemicals and hazardous materials storage. Experience in code compliance techniques and practices and involving appropriate staff in resolution when appropriate.
- Code research & interpretation – Extensive knowledge and experience researching and, critically reading and interpreting the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) Standards, International Code Conference (ICC) codes. Must be skillful in analytical problem-solving, written and verbal communications. Must compile code interpretations and evaluating code equivalencies, providing written response to conclusions. Also requires considerable knowledge of and experience with construction materials and industry standard practices.
- Record Creation and Maintenance – Considerable experience using lap top computers, iPads and software programs (i.e. MicroSoft®, GovWell®) for inputting, organizing, storing and retrieving data. Creates and maintains records and reports of all job-related activities and prepares monthly reports. Documents plan reviews.
- Meetings – Ability to speak effectively in public and maintain a professional presence. Must communicate well and express oneself clearly and concisely in both oral and written communication. Skilled in analyzing problems, identifying alternative solutions, projecting consequences of proposed actions and implementing recommendations in support. Skillful at establishing and maintaining effective working relationships among staff and other personnel. Maintains a Customer Service First Attitude, treating contractors, business owners and Customers with Professionalism, Integrity, and Respect.
