Position Overview
This position is responsible for managing the daily operations of a single printing operation (i.e.press room, bindery or copy center) that is revenue generating or cost recoverable. Duties include scheduling and assigning work, maintaining inventory, purchasing supplies, cash handling reconciliation and may include customer service functions such as consultation, ordering, cost estimates, and cashiering. Duties reflect substantial variety and complexity. Assignments are broad in nature and usually require creativity and originality. Serves as a resource for others in the resolution of complex problems and issues. Performs other duties as requested by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma/GED equivalent and six years of related experience. Substitution of education for experience allowed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to direct and manage the work of others. Skill in the operation of complex equipment. Ability to correctly identify various colors of inks and papers. Ability to lift 25-100 pounds. Ability to make simple computations and tabulations. Strong supervisory skills. Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience operating a fork lift, pallet jack and driving a box truck.

Job Duties
- Trains employees in the use of standard practices, methods, tools, equipment and materials for the digital and offset printing and or bindery equipment with a focus on minimizing waste and downtime and providing exemplary quality in the completed print projects. Cross trains staff with other areas of department to have staff available to assist as needed as part of PDS team. Reviews job performance, coaches and trains direct report staff
- Demonstrates ability to solve problems with bindery equipment and handles service issues and operator repairs as necessary.
- Knowledgeable of departmental software ( MIS) from production standpoint and trains subordinates in its use for timekeeping and materials transactions. Learns new software willingly. Monitors use of departmental data tracking software and insures entries are made to reflect correct usage of materials such as ink and paper for each project as well as time used for each machine function.
- Knowledgeable of university branding guidelines and PDS proofing and production policies. Follows these policies and insures subordinate staff follows policies and processes.
- Coordinates and schedules production and staff for operating efficiency on digital and offset equipment and or bindery equipment to maximize production. Demonstrates self motivation to improve processes and procedures within the production area.
- Understands and follows procedures for production within the different departmental areas. Uses the information to assist with scheduling to keep projects on track and allowing for after press functions to be completed and projects delivered in necessary time frame. Plans details of departmental projects including preventative maintenance and routine scheduling of hardware and software upgrades as necessary
- Operates offset and digital or bindery equipment with a high level of proficiency and trains and coaches staff to be able to operate on a professional level. Keeps focus on quality and customer satisfaction as top priority. Exercises assertiveness when appropriate to keep project on track. Schedules staff production time as necessary to meet deadlines. Demonstrates knowledge of all equipment and their functions within the departments to insure successful completion of printed projects
- Assumes responsibility for assigned tasks. Oversees projects coming through shop to avert possible printing or bindery issues before they occur in production. Organizes projects and sets priorities in order to carry out assigned tasks in a timely manner and keep projects moving forward to completion.
- Knowledge of equipment operating and maintenance needs to enable setting of production and waste standards for operators.
- Displays a positive and professional attitude at all times when interactions with customers, students and staff members. Has a very customer oriented focus whether it is internal or external customers
- Is willing to provide input to help solve client or CSR concerns with scheduling or production issues.
- Accurately interpret bindery processes on order tickets and insures that those processes are expertly performed on the equipment. Notifies CSRs of any questionable production processes that are requested and offers solutions. Communicates in a clear and professional manner with customers and staff members.
- Attends and participates in monthly manager meetings. Researches availability of new processes or equipment for production area and makes recommendations for acquisitions. Attends production meetings and provides press scheduling information to other managers/staff
- Seeks to improve professional development through educational and professional training.
- Establishes and maintains all necessary records and reports.
- Knowledge of University policies and procedures as related to job performance.
- Safety: Inspects equipment for needed repairs. Reviews work habits to avoid accidents.
