Position Overview
The Henard Laboratory (https://bdi.unt.edu/people/calvin-henard.html) in The BioDiscovery Institute and the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of North Texas is seeking to hire a highly motivated Research Assistant to join our team. The candidate will be expected to perform microbial genetics research investigating non-model, non-pathogenic bacteria. Specifically, the incoming researcher will work on projects aimed at engineering methanotrophic bacteria to maximize product formation from one-carbon substrates. These projects apply molecular and synthetic biology tools and techniques; thus, candidate familiarity with PCR, molecular cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, DNA transformation, and microbial physiology and biochemistry is desired.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree with major course work in the field of assignment, or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Knowledge of scientific research techniques, methods and procedures.
* Working knowledge of equipment used in related fields of research.
* Considerable knowledge of health, safety, and security precautions in keeping with type of research being done.
* Ability to set up and operate research instrumentation and equipment. Ability to make accurate assays and to prepare reports, charts, or graphs on results.
* Ability to work effectively with fellow researchers, staff members, faculty, supervisors and students.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with microbes, preferably non-model
Analytical chemistry experience (LC, GC)
Proficiency in advanced molecular techniques (qPCR, RTPCR, SDS PAGE, western blotting, DNA sequencing)
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Job Duties:
- Maintain laboratory records and compliance. Update bacterial strain, primer, and chemical inventories as needed. Knowledge of health, safety, and security precautions related to ongoing research.
- Conduct various experiments using established experimental procedures. Ability to design and execute experiments and prepare graphs, charts, and/or reports of resultant data.
- Operation and maintenance of research equipment Working knowledge of equipment being used and troubleshooting/facilitating repairs if needed.
Work Schedule:
Monday to Friday 8-5, Weekends as needed
