North Texas’ athletic programs are classified as NCAA Division I, the largest and highest division among all colleges and universities. Position Overview
The University of North Texas is a Division I program committed to academic and athletic excellence. The fulltime position of Assistant Director, Academic Services will support student athletes in various sports programs within our athletic department. This position requires consistent and open communication with coaches and staff. Must have a total commitment and adherence to NCAA, Conference USA and institutional regulations. The Assistant Director, Academic Services will report to the Athletic Director, Academic Services.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in in related field and two years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge and understanding of NCAA rules and regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree in counseling, sport management, higher education, or a related area. Two years of experience as an academic counselor/ advisor for student athletes at the Division I level. Proficiency and/or familiarity with the University's systems, including EIS, Blackboard/Canvas, and TeamWorks/Retain. Experience with assessment of academic programs and outcomes. Proficiency in using computer software such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher, etc. A thorough understanding of student development, counseling, advising, or related areas; Ability to interact with individuals of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds; Ability to collaborate and work effectively with other staff, student athletes, coaches, and administrators; Be able to work in time sensitive and occasional pressured environments; Ability to organize tasks and set priorities. Knowledge of NCAA rules
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Job Duties
- Monitors, advises, and evaluates student athletes progress toward degree and eligibility requirements. Maintain records in compliance with University of North Texas, NCAA and conference standards.
- Serves as primary contact between Athletic Academic Services and assigned sport coaching staff(s). Prepare necessary reports and updates for coaches and staff.
- Advises assigned student athletes in academic progress, degree selection, appropriate class selection, academic policies and campus resources.
- Assists with recruiting activities as needed. Meets with, and guides, prospective student athletes through preadmission process. Evaluates prospective student athletes academic information.
- Assists with the degree progress and support of student athletes participating in assigned sport(s).
- Serves as an athletic academic services liaison to staff and faculty. Works in collaboration with UNT athletic compliance and athletic certification to ensure proper procedures and process.
- Provides consistent and frequent communication with Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student Services, Assistant Athletic Director for Student Services, and sport program staff regarding academic progress of assigned student athletes.
- Collaborates with the Learning Specialists and Tutor Coordinator to assign tutoring, learning specialist sessions and academic coaching meetings. Also assigns tutoring and study hall requirements.
- Evaluates prospective student athletes academic information; monitors academic progress and proactively creates intervention plans.
- Coordinates faculty/staff guest coaching activities for assigned sports.
- Completes other duties necessary to carry out the mission of the Athletic Department and Academic Services.
