Department Summary

UNT Health, Clinical Practice Group is the academic clinical practice for the Health Science Center. Focused on improving health outcomes to build a healthier community. The UNT Health primary and multispecialty care clinics are located on the HSC campus in Fort Worth. Our care teams extend to local hospitals, surgery centers, long-term and continuing care centers, and mobile and in-home care. The Clinical Practice Group’s interprofessional teams work collaboratively to achieve an optimized treatment plan tailored to the individual patient. Physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, physical therapists, pharmacists, social workers, psychologists, specialized technicians, and nurses work together while intentionally integrating health care students, residents, and fellows to deliver care to our community.

Position Overview

UNT Health is seeking a detail-oriented Referral Coordinator to join our team. In this role, you will serve as the primary bridge between our patients, primary care teams, and specialists. You will provide critical administrative support to manage outgoing referrals and referral authorizations.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and three years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of safety rules, regulations and university policies, including those related to clinical services and HIPAA requirements.
  • Knowledge of various health insurance plans (PPO, HMO, Medicare, Medicaid), pre-authorization/referral requirements, and medical medical billing terminology.
  • Ability to navigate insurance roadblocks, delayed authorizations, or scheduling conflicts independently to minimize gaps in patient care.
  • Ability to efficiently manage a high volume of referral requests, balance administrative tasks, and meet strict clinical deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills across various media and at all levels of medical organizations, with the ability to coordinate with teams and external providers effectively.
  • Proficiency in tracking and trending clinical services, coordinating the transmission of medical reports, and maintaining a provider network.
  • Ability to ensure accurate scheduling, tracking of clinical services and compliance with organizational policies and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

Bilingual and experience with referral processing and authorizations preferred.

Job Duties

  • Completing outgoing referrals for the clinic.
  • Receive, review, and schedule patients per referrals.
  • Coordinating care for patients between primary care and specialist office.

Physical Requirements

  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
