Department Summary
The BioDiscovery Institute (BDI) within the Division of Research & Innovation at UNT, combines research expertise in life sciences, engineering and data science to discover and innovate next generation biotechnologies while training future scientists to solve health, food, and energy challenges.
Position Overview
This position supports faculty in the BioDiscovery Institute (BDI) by managing the procurement of laboratory supplies and equipment, negotiating and maintaining service contracts, and coordinating with maintenance staff to ensure the reliable operation of facilities and instruments. The role includes keeping laboratories stocked with necessary consumables, overseeing proper waste disposal, maintaining accurate inventory records, and supporting BDI’s space survey and space‑management needs.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related field and five years of professional related experience in related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to work independently.
- Knowledge of appropriate safety and security procedures related to assigned tasks.
- Ability to be contacted during off duty hours for emergency situations.
- Working knowledge of laboratory practices, tools, materials, equipment, and control systems.
- Ability to maintain laboratory inventory.
- Strong accuracy, attention to detail, and record keeping skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a higher‑education or research laboratory environment.
- Experience organizing vendor interactions, such as vendor fairs or equipment demonstrations.
- Familiarity with laboratory operations, equipment maintenance, and service contracts.
- Knowledge of safety, compliance, and EH&S requirements in a lab setting.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
Job Duties
- Obtain bids and quotes. Make decisions on products and pricing that are research optimal and cost effective
- Keep service contracts up to date, and ensure equipment is repaired in a timely manner consistent with availability of funds.
- Maintain excellent relations with the Facilities Department and follow up to ensure effective servicing of the BDI facilities. Make sure there is availability to troubleshoot facilities problems as needed.
- Be responsible for purchasing research consumables in a timely manner for all BDI members. Keep track of laboratory inventory. Keep clean records of all purchases on a log.
- Ensure all training required for the position is complete and up to date
- Oversee distribution of lab supplies and equipment to correct locations within BDI.
- Keep clean records in order to provide details for both inventory and space survey.
