Risk Management Services' programs provide proactive support for the strategic, operational and financial foundation of the University of North Texas. Position Overview
This position is responsible for the direction and oversight of the University's laboratory safety programs including but not limited to biological, chemical, and radiation safety. The Laboratory Safety Program Manager provides leadership to the Environmental Health & Safety team as a whole and directly supervises full-time employees as well as student workers. This role provides technical support and expertise in regards to safety where research is being conducted in laboratories and in teaching laboratory environments. The position collaborates with all levels of the institution to develop and implement appropriate policies and practices while continually evaluating established procedures for compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in related field and four years' of experience in radiation safety inspections and emergency response; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

* Demonstrates a high level of emotional intelligence; capable of building and maintaining strong working relationships, understanding various perspectives to complex problems.
* Ability to substantiate results from reports using spreadsheets and analysis.
* Ability to provide support for emergency response when called upon.
* Thorough knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations relating to area of assignment.
* Demonstrates the ability to understand the scope of university operations and how safety supports work at an institution of higher learning.
* Ability to collaborate with a large diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders.
* Understands new regulations, trends, and best practices. Remains professionally active through applicable professional organizations and maintenance of applicable certifications.
Preferred Qualifications
At a minimum a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Physics or other science related field and five years of experience in laboratory safety. Preferred Masters Degree or higher in the above fields and professional credentials in related areas such as CHMM, CBSP, CIH or CSP.
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Preferred one or more of the following or other safety related professional certifications CSP, CHMM, CIH, CBSP.
Job Duties:
- Work with regulatory agencies and auditors to resolve issues and represent UNT in a positive manner.
- Proactively works to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations by understanding laboratory standards and hazardous waste rules such as those affiliated with OSHA, EPA/RCRA, and DOT NFPA and ANSI.
- Provide oversight for research and teaching spaces that involve hazards and/or regulatory liability. Provide consultation with the principal investigators and laboratory personnel in order to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Perform regular safety surveys of all laboratories at main campus, Discovery Park, and Frisco campuses thoroughly document findings and implement corrective actions. Prepare technical reports including standard operation procedures and inspection reports and coordinate accident and incident investigations for laboratory related illnesses/injuries, incidents.
- Maintain the testing of all emergency equipment such as fume hoods, safety showers, eye washes and biological safety cabinets located at main campus, Discovery Park, and Frisco.
- Maintain supervision of the Radiation Safety Program.
- Provide guidance for students, faculty and staff and prepare technical reports. Excellent oral communication, strong written and presentation skills, including the ability to prepare professional-quality presentations, speak clearly and engagingly about complex issues before small and large groups of diverse audiences.
- Provide direction, leadership, and management of assigned personnel and ensure internal related policies and procedures are adhered to.
- Function as lead point of contact for all trainings offered by EH&S.
